The Virginia Department of Education will host eight “Commonwealth Conversations” with parents, educators and community members on cellphone-free education, including one from 9-10:30 a.m. on July 30 at James Monroe High School.
This comes after Gov. Youngkin issued an executive order last week directing the Department of Education to draft guidance for public school divisions to adopt local policies and procedures establishing a “cellphone-free education” in Virginia. The executive order mandates Virginia public school divisions establish a cellphone-free education by Jan. 1 of next year.
Parents, educators and community members are invited to attend a “Commonwealth Conversation” to discuss their thoughts and expectations for the upcoming policy changes. Among the locations:
- James Monroe High School on July 30 from 9-10:30 a.m.
- Osbourn High School in Manassas on July 18 from 2-3:30
Virginians who would like to register to join the conversation at these events, learn more about Executive Order 33, or share feedback about cell phone-free education, should visit the Cell Phone-Free Education in Virginia webpage (www.doe.virginia.gov/cell-phone-free-education).
