The family of a Fredericksburg-area man last seen July 4 in the city is becoming increasingly concerned about his well-being.

Jonathan Mark Corey, 32, is 5-foot-10, 170 pounds with tattoos of lions on his chest, a spider web on his shoulder and a skull and ship on his arm.

He is known to frequent downtown Fredericksburg and was last seen around Dixon Street. He was reported missing July 12. He also often ventures to Maryland.

“He’s been known to travel long distances, so it’s tough to say where he actually is,” his brother Donald Corey said. “He usually would be in contact with a friend or family member, but a lot of his friends reached out to me because they have not been in contact with him.  He was supposed to go play cornhole at Spirits [in downtown Fredericksburg] Sunday night and didn’t show up.”

Donald Corey said there is also no trace of his brother posting on social media, and his phone is disconnected. His vehicle is sitting beside his job at a construction company in Spotsylvania County, where he was also temporarily sleeping. Donald Corey said his brother may have vandalized the building where he sleeps and works and could believe that law enforcement is attempting to arrest him.

“He may think he’s on the run from the law, but he’s not,” Donald Corey said. “He damaged some property at the job and took off running because I think he’s scared … His boss came back from vacation and the shop was kind of destroyed.”

The Fredericksburg Police Department was initially investigating Jonathan Corey’s disappearance, but Spotsylvania authorities are now handling the case.

Maj. Troy Skebo of the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office said investigators talked to family members, friends and a former employer. He said the sheriff’s office also utilized social media to alert citizens to be on the lookout.

Skebo said no leads were developed from interviews or tips. The sheriff’s office urges anyone with information on Jonathan Corey’s whereabouts to call (540) 582-7115.
