The sign marking the new Fire Station No. 3 that will be built for the Fredericksburg Fire Department was unveiled Tuesday at the intersection of Fall Hill Avenue and Wicklow Drive. Fire Chief Michael Jones and members of the city council gathered to assist in the unveiling.
Jones also delivered a short speech, highlighting the need for the station.
“Once this station becomes a reality and is operational, we will be able to provide quicker and better service to our most vulnerable and underserved communities,” Jones said. “This will also reduce response times to the area that is the farthest points away from both existing fire stations.”
The Fredericksburg Fire Department covers approximately 11 square miles and serves nearly 26,000 people. As the city has grown, the city council and the fire department came together to get the new $10.4 million station approved with a goal of speedier emergency response times.
The new station will be in Snowden Park, and it is expected to force the relocation of the baseball field to the Cal Ripken Sr. Center on Wicklow Drive.
“We have outgrown the two fire stations we have, so this was a much needed first step towards helping keep the residents of Fredericksburg safe,” Mayor Kerry Devine said. “We don’t have an exact date of when the Fire Station No. 3 will begin construction just yet but it is in the works and will be announced soon.”
