Police say the 38-year-old man was pointing a firearm at a woman during a domestic disturbance early Sunday morning.

Man dies after being shot by Spotsylvania deputy

A Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office deputy was placed on administrative leave after an early Sunday morning shooting in the 10400 block of Spotswood Drive.

According to a release from the Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call at approximately 3:16 a.m. and discovered a man pointing a firearm at an adult female.

The deputy shot the 38-year-old man, who died at the scene. According to the release, deputies immediately rendered aid to the man until emergency personnel arrived. The woman was not injured.

The sheriff’s office requested the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation assist in the investigation. The sheriff’s office did not release the name of the deputy or the deceased.
