After nearly 10 years working for the City of Fredericksburg, Bill Freehling is leaving his post as Director of Economic Development and Tourism.
In an email to members of the semi-autonomous Economic Development Authority on Friday afternoon, Freehling wrote that while his last day of work will be June 25, “I will be not be leaving actual City though.” Freehling, who turns 50 in November, wrote that he came to the decision “on my own, after much contemplation.”
“With my kids getting older (who isn’t?), I decided the time is right to step down from this position,” he wrote.
Reached by phone on Friday afternoon, Freehling politely declined to comment beyond the contents of the email.
Freehling joined city government in 2014 after spending a decade as a reporter at The Free Lance-Star, where he covered business for much of his tenure. In 2016, he was promoted to his current role as Director of Economic Development.
Freehling added that he plans to take some time off before deciding on his future career plans sometime in the fall.
“Until June 25 I will remain fully engaged in the job at hand,” he wrote.
