A 72-year-old Stafford woman was killed Friday afternoon when she was struck by a car while checking her mailbox.
Deputies responded around 1 p.m. to a call for an auto accident in the 800 block of Widewater Road in Stafford. It was discovered a pedestrian was struck. Shelley Moncure, of Stafford, was pronounced dead shortly after units arrived on scene.
The preliminary investigation, along with crash scene evidence collected by the Stafford Sheriff’s Office Traffic Safety Unit, revealed the victim went outside to check her mailbox. That’s when the driver traveling eastbound on Widewater Road struck her.
The driver of the vehicle that struck Moncure remained on scene and was uninjured. The crash is still under investigation by Deputy G.P. McCaulley.
