The Stafford Sheriff’s Office says the suspect from the Rappahannock Landing subdivision shooting is in the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office’s custody.
Wednesday afternoon at approximately 2:45 p.m. deputies responded to the 200 block of Streamview Drive in the Rappahannock Landing subdivision for multiple calls of shots fired. When deputies arrived, they located a 42-year-old Stafford man Derrick Campbell with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Detectives worked diligently to collect evidence, talk to witnesses, and identify the shooter. They also discovered the shooter and victim were known to each other. Ever since the shooting, detectives have been executing search warrants, collecting evidence, and even traveled to both Maryland and D.C. in attempts to locate the shooter.
The shooter was identified as 42-year-old James Wright Jr. of Spotsylvania. He was taken into custody Friday morning about 10:00. Wright is charged with first degree murder, as well as, using a firearm while committing a felony. More charges may be obtained at a later date. He will be held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
