Long-time residents of Louisa County know the story of Jack Jouett, but those outside the County’s borders may not be as familiar with the name. Three groups in Louisa have come together to highlight the importance of “the South’s Paul Revere,” as Jouett has come to be known. Louisa County Parks, Recreation & Tourism, the Louisa County Historical Society, and Southern Revere Cellars are hosting a heritage festival on June 3rd to celebrate the 242nd anniversary of Jouett’s ride from Cuckoo Tavern to warn Thomas Jefferson and other Virginia legislators at Monticello of approaching British troops.
June 3rd was declared Jack Jouett Day by the Virginia General Assembly in 2011 and this year’s festival will be held on that date from 11am-5pm at Southern Revere Cellars (1100 E Jack Jouett Road, Louisa, VA 23093). Attendees will have the opportunity to step back in time with historical demonstrations, crafts, and discussions. This family-oriented event will also include craft vendors, pony rides, mechanical bull rides, a magic show, live music, food, beverages, face painting, a book signing, axe throwing and more. Admission will be FREE to all.
“This festival is just one way we’re hoping to spread the word about the importance of Jack Jouett,” said Louisa County Supervisor Willie Gentry. “We’re working to tell the story along his path, and being on Jack Jouett Road, Southern Revere is a great choice to host this event. We plan to complement Jack Jouett and revolutionary-period education with some really fun activities for the whole family at the event.”
