Northern Neck Electric Cooperative’s (NNEC) Powering Community Golf Tournament raised over $10,000 for the Healthy Harvest Food Bank, which will provide more than 100,000 meals in the region.
The Powering Community Golf Tournament brought together partners, contractors, consultants, local businesses, and fellow electric cooperatives to Hobbs Hole Golf Course with a simple mission: to play golf, have fun, and raise funds for a worthy cause, the Healthy Harvest Food Bank. More than 20 teams and sponsors participated, some traveling from as far away as Massachusetts. Dozens of NNEC employees volunteered to help run the tournament.
“I am overwhelmed by the support of our employees, our friends, and our partners, and the result and impact of that support is incredible,” said Brad Hicks, president and CEO of NNEC. “There are many in our community who lack access to healthy food and the education about its benefits.”
“For some students in our region, they only get a healthy meal at school,” said Craig Hazard, director of operations for Healthy Harvest Food Bank. “With this significant donation, we can provide meals for those students over the weekend and all summer.”
The Healthy Harvest Food Bank serves nearly 8,000 people monthly over 6 counties, including Westmoreland, Richmond, Lancaster, and Northumberland. They served nearly 1.5 million meals in 2022. The food bank is currently building a hydroponic and aquaponic facility to increase access to healthy proteins, like fish.
“Over the last two years, we started to realign our events and community investment with our mission to improve the quality of life in our communities,” said Kyle Allwine, manager, public relations, “This event certainly delivered on that mission, but we aren’t done yet. We still have more work to do in our community.”
NNEC’s next event is the Bright Futures Fund Run, a fun run for the entire family that will be hosted on Friday, June 9. All proceeds from the run will provide books to children through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Registration is available at
