From Downtown Greens:
This town loves it’s water fowl, especially the ever popular Gary the Goose!
What some folks don’t know is that feeding bread to Gary or any ducks or geese is not only very bas for the birds but is also bad for the waterways they live in.
Bread doesn’t have much nutritional value and fills the bird’s stomach so that it doesn’t forage for foods it would naturally eat, which can lead to malnutrition. Malnutrition can then lead to some very life-threatening situations for the fowl to run afoul of.
Not only that, but uneaten soggy bread can cause a build-up of bad nutrients in the waterway, which can lead to more algae growing around water, more diseases and more pests, such as rats.
So, what should we feed Gary and his peers to keep them happy and healthy? Frozen peas, cut grapes, meal worms, and cracked-corn to name a few things!
Luckily, our friends at Wren & Sparrow @wrenandsparrowllc make it easy for us to be good friends to our feathered friends! Stop by and grab a bag of cracked corn to feed to Gary and all the members of his goose gang!
