When the winning numbers were announced on January 1 for Virginia’s New Year’s Millionaire Raffle, Daniel Zarow wasn’t in any hurry.

“Usually we don’t win, so I didn’t bother checking,” he told Virginia Lottery officials.  It wasn’t until a few days later that the Occoquan man got around to checking. That’s when he discovered he’d won the $1 million top prize.

“I was in disbelief!” he said. “I asked my wife to check. She was just floored!”

He bought ticket #608075 at the Safeway Store at 4240 Merchant Plaza in Woodbridge.

The other four million-dollar winning tickets were bought in Danville, Burke, Henrico and Midlothian. Seven tickets won $100,000 each. They were bought in Blacksburg, Chantilly, Chesapeake, Fredericksburg, Gloucester, Midlothian and Woodstock. An additional 1,000 tickets each won $500.

Mr. Zarow, who is an electrical engineer, said he has no immediate plans for his winnings except to save for his children’s college.

All Virginia Lottery profits go to K-12 education in Virginia. The winning ticket was bought in Prince William County, which received more than $62.2 million in Lottery funds for K-12 education last fiscal year. In Fiscal Year 2022, the Lottery raised more than $779 million for K-12 education, making up approximately 10 percent of Virginia’s total K-12 school budget.
