VDOT is alerting travelers that a work zone on Interstate 95 northbound will continue to cause heavy traffic through the morning rush in the Fredericksburg area between exit 130 (Route 3) and exit 133 (Route 17).
Currently, three lanes of I-95 northbound are open over the Rappahannock River between the City of Fredericksburg and Stafford County. Two lanes of traffic are crossing the new I-95 northbound bridge. A third lane crosses the original northbound Rappahannock River bridge, and allows motorists to access exit 133 (Falmouth/Warrenton), but also rejoins with the I-95 travel lanes north of exit 133.
Northbound I-95 traffic will remain in this temporary configuration until 7 p.m. tonight, Dec. 6.

The work zone is expected to cause major congestion on I-95 north and Route 1 through early tomorrow, Dec. 7.
Northbound I-95 travelers with destinations north of the Washington, D.C, area, should detour at exit 104 (Carmel Church) in Caroline County, and travel Route 207 eastbound to Route 301 northbound to avoid delay.
Starting tonight at 7 p.m., one lane will close on I-95 northbound, and the exit 133 off-ramp to Route 17 (Warrenton/Falmouth) will also close at that time.
Weather permitting, work will continue throughout the day as scheduled below, including the exit 133 off-ramp closure later tonight.
Tuesday, Dec. 6 (Today)
- 4:30 a.m. – Three I-95 northbound lanes open in a temporary traffic pattern.
- 7 p.m. – Single lane on I-95 northbound closed. Exit 133 (Falmouth/Warrenton) off-ramp in Stafford closed. Detour north to exit 136 (Centreport Parkway).
- 11 p.m. – Two lanes closed, one lane open between exit 130 (Route 3) in Fredericksburg and 136 (Centreport Parkway) in Stafford.

Wednesday, Dec. 7 (Tomorrow)
- 4:30 a.m. – All northbound lanes open, and exit 133 (Falmouth/Warrenton) reopens. Northbound traffic exiting to exit 133 (Falmouth/Warrenton) will use temporary off-ramp beginning at mile marker 131, and will cross the original northbound Rappahannock River bridge.

Construction will continue over the next 18 months to finish the local travel lanes and to perform maintenance on the existing northbound Rappahannock River bridge while it is closed.
Opening this interstate bridge is a milestone for the I-95 Northbound Rappahannock River Crossing project. The $132 million project is adding three additional travel lanes on the busiest segment of I-95 in the Fredericksburg area, which carries around 150,000 vehicles a day. The project is scheduled to be complete in spring 2024.
95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension
Within this same work zone, crews building the 95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension will place beams for future flyover ramp north of exit 133 (Falmouth/Warrenton).
Tonight through early Thursday, Dec. 8, northbound traffic will be reduced to a single lane, and briefly diverted into the median on temporary pavement for around 1,000 feet.
