The University of Mary Washington is once again listed in two of the leading college rankings, each released in August.
This week, Washington Monthly, which judges schools based on contributions to the greater good in the categories of social mobility, research and public service, recognized UMW among its top liberal arts colleges.
This year marks the first time UMW has been ranked among its peers in the liberal arts and sciences, as the University updated its Carnegie Classification earlier in the year. The reclassification and associated rankings underscore UMW’s longstanding mission and place the University as a national leader among schools that share a reputation and commitment to academic excellence in undergraduate education.
UMW placed 76th overall on Washington Monthly’s Liberal Arts Colleges list, which considers baccalaureate arts and sciences institutions nationwide, both public and private. On Washington Monthly’s Best Bang for the Buck listing, Mary Washington placed 71st among Southeastern region institutions. Washington Monthly bills this as a “one-of-a-kind list of schools that help non-wealthy students attain marketable degrees at affordable prices.”
The Washington Monthly rankings focus on publicly available data, taking into account graduation rates, net price of attendance and student loan data, among other factors that matter to students and their families.
UMW students’ civic engagement also earned Mary Washington a spot on Washington Monthly’s Best Colleges for Student Voting honor roll. To make this list, schools must participate in the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge; have public data from the data from the National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE); and have shown a repeated commitment to increasing student voting—and been transparent about the results.
Earlier in August, UMW earned a spot in the “Best 388 Colleges for 2023” published by The Princeton Review.
“University of Mary Washington is one of the outstanding institutions we profile in this, the 31st edition of our flagship college guide. Since 1992, our annual ‘Best Colleges’ guide has showcased the schools we recommend to applicants and their parents as the nation’s best for undergraduate academics. It features only about 14% of America’s four-year colleges, and it has become one of the most popular of our 150 books,” said The Princeton Review Editor-in-Chief Rob Franek.
UMW is included among the Best Southeastern colleges and previously earned recognition in The Princeton Review’s “Green Colleges” list.
The Fiske Guide to Colleges named UMW among the “best and most interesting” public and private four-year colleges and universities in its 2023 edition earlier this summer.
