Rodney Theophile keyed the third shutout of the season for the Fredericksburg Nationals Thursday at Segra Stadium. The outstanding starter carved 5.1 innings of seven-strikeout, no-run ball en route to a 6-0 FredNats win.
Viandel Pena put the FredNats on top early with an RBI double in the third vs. starter Alex Santos, who would go five innings with just a single run on his resume and fall to 0-4 with the loss.
Fredericksburg expanded the lead vs. Fayetteville relief man Deylen Miley with a five-run sixth. Brady House and Andry Arias each picked up two RBIs in the explosive frame. House tallied his RBIs on a double, and Arias carded his on a triple as the FredNats reached seven straight to start the inning.
Theophile now owns a 1.29 ERA. Orlando Ribalta entered the game behind him and stranded a pair in scoring position in the sixth. He went on to fire 2.2 innings of one-hit ball. Jack Sinclair allowed two to board with walks in the ninth before finishing the shutout. FredNat pitching stranded seven and held the Woodpeckers (20-28) to 0-for-7 with men in scoring position.
The FredNats improve to 25-22 with the win and are just 1.5 games out of first place in the Carolina League North Division. RHP Andry Lara (1-2, 6.67 ERA) will toe the rubber for Fredericksburg vs. RHP Bryant Salgado (2-3, 5.35 ERA) for Fayetteville on Friday.
