Express Lanes

Exit 150 (Joplin Road) Prince William County

Tuesday – Thursday, 10 p.m. – 4 a.m. Starting at 10 p.m., southbound travelers on the Express Lanes will be detoured to the general purpose lanes at exit 150 (Joplin Road) in Prince William County until 4 a.m. The closure and detour is needed to allow crews to build the future access point to Express Lanes at exit 148 (Quantico).

Winter Storm Debris Cleanup Update

Cleanup of downed trees and debris from the Jan. 3 winter storm continues along primary and secondary roads in Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties. More than 1.1 million cubic yards of tree debris has been gathered since the storm, which represents more than 21,000 truck loads. VDOT estimates around 1.5 million cubic yards of debris will be gathered by the end of the cleanup operation in Fredericksburg District, which is expected to continue into July 2022.

Debris has been identified along more than 840 secondary roads. With Interstate 95 pickup now complete, and 75 percent of primary routes finished, additional crews are working on secondary roads, which are routes numbered 600 and above.

Motorists should be alert to mobile work zones in the affected counties, with lane closures as needed. Crews are using heavy, slow-moving construction equipment to gather debris along road shoulders and medians. Read the release here.

Stafford County

Route 3 Eastbound

Thursday – Friday, 7 a.m. –  5 p.m. Guardrail repair. Single lane closure on Route 3 eastbound near Caisson Road.

Route 218

Thursday – Friday, 7 a.m. –  5 p.m. Guardrail repair. Flagging crew will alternate, one-way traffic the work zone on Route 218 near Route 604 (Belle Plains Road/McCarty Road).

Eskimo Hill Road

Tuesday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Road resurfacing will be underway on Tuesday through Thursday between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. with one-way, alternating traffic. On Tuesday through Friday, crews will also perform bridge maintenance repairs between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. with one-way, alternating traffic.

Ferry Road

Wednesday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Mobile work zone on Ferry Road between Route 3 and Route 1161 for paving. A flagging crew will alternate one-way traffic near the work zone.

Hartwood Road

Tuesday – Wednesday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Mobile work zone on Hartwood Road between Route 705 and Route 614 for paving. A flagging crew will alternate one-way traffic near the work zone.

Telegraph Road

DETOUR Wednesday, 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Telegraph Road will be closed to through traffic from the southern intersection with Route 1 to Woodstock Lane. Pavement resurfacing work. Follow posted detour to use Woodstock Lane to access Route 1.

Willomere Pond Road

Thursday, 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. One-way, alternating traffic. Road maintenance repairs.

Spotsylvania County

Route 208 (Courthouse Road) over I-95

Tuesday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. Alternating lane closures on Courthouse Road at the I-95 overpass. Bridge maintenance.

Harrison Road

Tuesday – Thursday, 7 p.m. – 6 a.m. Alternating lane closures for milling and paving between Leavells Road and Gordon Road.

Wednesday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Mobile lane closures for pavement marking.

Massaponax Church Road

Tuesday – Thursday, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. Mobile work zone on Massasponax Church Road between Route 1 and Route 17 for installation of pavement markers.

Mine Road

Wednesday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Lane closure for permit work connected with private development on Mine Road between Norfolk Way and Lansdowne Road.

Old Plank Road

Route 30

Route 207 (Rogers Clark Boulevard)

Tuesday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Right lane closure between Ladysmith Road and Route 301 for structural steel review under bridge.

Frog Level Road

Thursday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Single lane closure at intersection with Mt. Vernon Church Road. Guardrail repair.

Ladysmith Road

Tuesday – Thursday, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. Mobile work zone for milling and paving on Ladysmith Road between the bridge over I-95 and Balty Road.

Secondary Road Resurfacing Work

Tuesday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Mobile operation on various routes for road resurfacing with surface treatment. A flagging crew will direct one-way alternating traffic near the work zone, or a pilot truck will be used to guide drivers. Work will be underway along the following routes:

Route 205 (Ridge Road)

Route 223 at Milford Haven Bridge

Thursday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. One-way, alternating traffic at the bridge over Milford Haven that connects Gwynn’s Island with mainland Mathews County. Crews will be measuring steel elements on the bridge for upcoming maintenance project.

Middlesex County

Route 17 Northbound

Tuesday – Wednesday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Single northbound lane closure near Wares Bridge Road/Dragon Road intersection. Guardrail repair.

Northumberland County

Route 201 (Courthouse Road)

Thursday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Mobile work zone with single lane closures for installation of rumble strips between Knights Run Road and Route 360. A flagging crew will alternate, one-way traffic near the work zone.

Route 360

Wednesday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Mobile work zone with lane closures for milling and paving between Courthouse Road and Dodlyt Road.

Remo Road

Additional Projects in Fredericksburg District

Caroline County

Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) Emergency Pipe Repair

Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) is closed to through traffic between Route 638 (S. River Road) and Route 764 (Scott’s Lane) to repair a large drainage pipe over May’s Run. Weather permitting, a detour will be in place for approximately six weeks while construction is underway, until late June 2022. Motorists are encouraged to follow the posted detour route:

Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) Widening

Construction is underway to widen Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) to four travel lanes between I-95 and just west of Route 1. A new raised median will separate eastbound and westbound travel lanes to allow for improved movement through the corridor. Additional left and right turn lanes will be built on Ladysmith Road at the Route 1 intersection A shared use path, sidewalks, crosswalks, and pedestrian crossing equipment will be installed. The project is expected to be complete in May 2024.

Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) and Route 738 (Partlow Road/Anderson Mill Road)

Construction is underway to improve safety at the Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) and Route 738 (Partlow Road/Anderson Mill Road) intersection in the Chilesburg area of Caroline County. The project will improve sight distance and realign and flatten a curve at the intersection. Project completion is expected in August 2022.

Route 652 (Cool Water Drive) over Polecat Creek

Cool Water Drive was closed to through traffic in March 2022 at the bridge over Polecat Creek, and will remain closed for a bridge replacement project. Significant deterioration was discovered in key bridge elements during a bridge inspection and VDOT closed the bridge for motorist safety. Motorists should follow signs posted along the recommended detour route. Preliminary engineering is underway on a project to replace the bridge, and work will be accelerated. The new bridge is estimated to open to traffic in September 2023.

Ladysmith Safety Rest Area, I-95 Southbound

Construction is underway to expand the number of parking spaces for trucks and larger commercial vehicles at the Ladysmith Safety Area in Caroline County on I-95 southbound. The rest area remains open to travelers, and existing parking remains largely available. However, the existing truck and oversize vehicle parking area will be closed at this rest area on April 19-29. Construction is anticipated to be complete in June 2022.

King and Queen County

Route 631 (Poor House Lane) Bridge Replacement Project

Poor House Lane is closed between Route 14 (The Trail) and Route 630 (DeShazo Road) to replace the bridge over Market Swamp. Detour will be in place through late June 2022. Signs will be posted along the recommended detour route, which is approximately nine miles:

King George County

Route 301 and the Nice-Middleton Bridge Replacement Project

A single northbound and southbound lane are closed on Route 301 between the weigh station and the Nice-Middleton Bridge for a Maryland Transportation Authority project to replace the bridge over the Potomac River and realign Route 301 at the bridge approach.

Richmond County

Route 637 (County Bridge Road)

County Bridge Road is closed to through traffic at the bridge over Cat Point Creek due to damage following heavy rain and flooding in summer 2021. The bridge replacement project is in preliminary engineering, with construction starting in fall 2022. The new bridge is anticipated to reopen in summer 2023.

Spotsylvania County

Route 1 and Commonwealth Drive

Be alert for construction activity on Route 1 near the Commonwealth Drive intersection, where work is underway to build a nearly 700-space Park & Ride commuter lot. Be alert for work zone barriers along the shoulders of Route 1, and lanes that are shifted to the east near the Commonwealth Drive intersection. Project completion is anticipated in May 2023.

Route 17 Overpass Replacement and Widening

Construction started in December 2020 on a project to replace the existing two-lane interstate overpass on Route 17 with a four-lane bridge. Route 17 will be widened to four travel lanes to just east of the Hospital Boulevard/Germanna Point Drive intersection. Sidewalk, a shared-use path, and pedestrian crossing equipment will be added as part of the project. Improvements will be completed in Feb. 2024.

Parkview Drive

Parkview Drive is closed to through traffic in the Artillery Ridge subdivision for approximately three months, through mid-July 2022. Parkview Drive will be closed near the Artillery Ridge Road intersection to allow VDOT crews to remove three deteriorated corrugated metal drainage pipes under the road. They will be replaced with concrete drainage pipes. Crews will be working on Mondays-Thursdays, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Town of West Point and New Kent County

Route 30/33 (Eltham Bridge)

Westbound single lane closure on Eltham Bridge, with work zone barrier. This lane closure is anticipated to remain in place through mid-June 2022. Crews are identifying locations where a future project will repair post-tensioned bridge girders.
