Exit 104 (Carmel Church)
Sunday – Monday, 7 p.m. – 7 a.m. Alternating, single lane closures on I-95 northbound and southbound to allow crews to conduct a routine bridge safety inspection. The bridge is located at mile markers 103 and 104 at the bridge over CSX railroad tracks.
Winter Storm Debris Cleanup
Multiple Routes
Motorists should be alert for mobile work zones in Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties next week for debris removal. Sixteen contractor crews continue to collect debris seven days a week from the state right-of-way following the Jan. 3, 2022, winter storm.
Debris removal is anticipated to be underway through late spring 2022. Crews are gathering an estimated 1.2 million cubic yards of debris in Fredericksburg District localities. Learn more about how routes are being prioritized for debris removal in this news release.
Stafford County
Route 1
Monday – Friday, 9:30 a.m. –  3 p.m. Single lane closure on Route 1 between American Legion Road and Centreport Parkway. Installation of detour signs for upcoming closure of American Legion Road I-95 overpass.
American Legion Road
Monday – Friday, 9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. Single lane closure between I-95 overpass and Route 1. Installation of detour signs for upcoming closure of I-95 overpass on American Legion Road.
Eskimo Hill Road
Tuesday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Crews will eradicate pavement markings ahead of upcoming paving work, with spot pavement repair on Thursday and Friday.
Centreport Parkway
Monday – Thursday, 9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. Single lane closure on Centreport Parkway for Improve95 project construction near the Route 1 intersection.
Ferry Road
Monday – Thursday, 7 a.m. –  7 p.m. Mobile single lane closures with one-way, alternating traffic for spot pavement repair.

City of Fredericksburg and Stafford County
Chatham Bridge (Route 3 Business)
Monday – Thursday, 7 a.m. –  4 p.m. Single lane closures on Route 3 Business eastbound and westbound at the Chatham Bridge between Fredericksburg and Stafford County for final inspection work connected with the bridge rehabilitation project. Paving activity and handrail installation for pedestrian trail underneath bridge on Stafford County riverbank.
Spotsylvania County
Route 17 (Mills Drive)
Monday – Wednesday, 9 p.m. – 4 a.m. Single lane closure with one-way, alternating traffic directed by flagging crews between Glenwood Drive and Latitude Street, at the I-95 overpass replacement project. Crews are delivering bridge beams to be placed for construction of the new, four-lane overpass.
Harrison Road
Monday – Thursday, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. Mobile lane closures on Harrison Road between Salem Church Road/Leavells Road and Gordon Road for paving and pavement marking work.
Leavells Road
Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. Mobile lane closures on Leavells Road between Courthouse Road and Smith Station Road/Spotsylvania Parkway for paving and lane marking work.
Massaponax Church Road
Wednesday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. Mobile lane closures on between Route 1 and Route 17 (Mills Drive) for milling, paving, and placing of temporary pavement markers.

Windmill Point Road

Additional Projects in Fredericksburg District
Caroline County
Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) Widening
Construction is underway to widen Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) to four travel lanes between I-95 and just west of Route 1. A new raised median will separate eastbound and westbound travel lanes to allow for improved movement through the corridor. Additional left and right turn lanes will be built on Ladysmith Road at the Route 1 intersection A shared use path, sidewalks, crosswalks, and pedestrian crossing equipment will be installed. The project is expected to be complete in May 2024.
Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) and Route 738 (Partlow Road/Anderson Mill Road)
Construction is underway to improve safety at the Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) and Route 738 (Partlow Road/Anderson Mill Road) intersection in the Chilesburg area of Caroline County. The project will improve sight distance and realign and flatten a curve at the intersection. Project completion is expected in August 2022.
Route 652 (Cool Water Drive) over Polecat Creek
Cool Water Drive was closed to through traffic in March 2022 at the bridge over Polecat Creek, and will remain closed for a bridge replacement project. Significant deterioration was discovered in key bridge elements during a bridge inspection, and VDOT closed the bridge for motorist safety. Motorists should follow signs posted along the recommended detour route. Preliminary engineering is underway on a project to replace the bridge, and work will be accelerated. The new bridge is estimated to open to traffic in September 2023.
Ladysmith Safety Rest Area, I-95 Southbound
Construction is underway to expand the number of parking spaces for trucks and larger commercial vehicles at the Ladysmith Safety Area in Caroline County on I-95 southbound. The rest area remains open to travelers, and existing parking remains available. However, the existing truck and oversize vehicle parking area will be closed at this rest area on April 4-14, and again on April 19-29. Construction is anticipated to be complete in June 2022.
City of Fredericksburg and Stafford County
Route 3 Business at Chatham Bridge
Chatham Bridge reopened to vehicle traffic in October 2021 after being closed since June 2020 for an improvement project. Periodic lane closures will be needed as construction work to repair the substructure, below the bridge deck, continues through April 2022.
King and Queen County
Route 631 (Poor House Lane) Bridge Replacement Project
Poor House Lane is closed between Route 14 (The Trail) and Route 630 (DeShazo Road) to replace the bridge over Market Swamp. Detour will be in place through late spring 2022. Signs will be posted along the recommended detour route, which is approximately nine miles:

  • Route 620 (Powcan Road)
King George County
The left northbound lane on Route 301 between the weigh station and the Nice-Middleton Bridge is closed for a Maryland Transportation Authority project to replace the bridge over the Potomac River and realign Route 301 at the bridge approach.
Richmond County
Route 637 (County Bridge Road)
County Bridge Road is closed to through traffic at the bridge over Cat Point Creek due to damage following heavy rain and flooding in summer 2021. The bridge replacement project is in preliminary engineering, and is anticipated to be advertised for construction in August 2023.
Spotsylvania County
Route 1 and Commonwealth Drive
Be alert for construction activity on Route 1 near the Commonwealth Drive intersection, where work is underway to build a nearly 700-space Park & Ride commuter lot. Be alert for work zone barriers along the shoulders of Route 1, and lanes that are shifted to the east near the Commonwealth Drive intersection. Project completion is anticipated in May 2023.
Route 17 Overpass Replacement and Widening
Construction started in December 2020 on a project to replace the existing two-lane interstate overpass on Route 17 with a four-lane bridge. Route 17 will be widened to four travel lanes to just east of the Hospital Boulevard/Germanna Point Drive intersection. Sidewalk, a shared-use path, and pedestrian crossing equipment will be added as part of the project. Improvements will be completed in Feb. 2024.
Lafayette Boulevard Turn Lane Extension
Construction is underway to extend the existing southbound right turn lane on Lafayette Boulevard from Harrison Road to Lee Street. This will improve capacity and reduce congestion for southbound traffic turning onto Harrison Road. The project is expected to be complete in May 2022.
Town of West Point and New Kent County
Route 30/33 (Eltham Bridge)
Westbound single lane closure on Eltham Bridge, with work zone barrier. This lane closure is anticipated to remain in place until spring 2022. Crews are identifying locations where a future project will repair post-tensioned bridge girders.
