From Fredericksburg Muslim Youth:
Fredericksburg Muslim Youth will host its third annual Muslim Women’s Day event on March 27th at 1:30PM EST at the University of Mary Washington’s Hurley Convergence Center. Hosted in collaboration with UMW’s and American University’s Muslim Student Association and the local Fredericksburg Muslim Youth, the event will feature three outstanding speakers from across the DMV area.
The event is free admission for all and all attendees must show proof of vaccination and stay masked in order to enter. Refreshments will be provided as well as a free raffle giveaway sponsored by the popular jewelry brand, Nominal. Fredericksburg Muslim Youth (FMY) has hosted this annual event every year since its founding by two Fredericksburg locals, Amirah Ahmed and Amatul Musawir. The recent Chancellor High School graduates and current college freshman are dedicated to amplifying the marginalized voices of Muslim women like themselves and use their organization as a catalyst.
Last year’s Muslim Women’s Day panel was hosted online due to the pandemic, but nevertheless garnered great national support. It featured seven trailblazers including activists Linda Sarsour and Sheila Nortley as well as Virginia Senator Ghazala Hasmi, amongst others. This year, the duo chose to take the opportunity to connect with the community at a more intimate level. FMY Co-founder and Director of Internal Affairs, Amirah Ahmed says:
“This year’s event is dedicated to serving the community that FMY was built for. Muslim women are breaking glass ceilings in every field now more than ever and it was time for us to highlight the amazing individuals from our very own DMV area. The theme of the event, “Muslim Women On The Frontlines: Culture, Career, and Catastrophe” embodies just that.”
The forum will include speaking time from special guests Dr. Amaarah DeCuir, journalist Sumayya Tobah, and Iman Garrebala. Local high school students will present their own inspirational takes on the accomplishments of Muslim women everywhere. FMY encourages all Fredericksburg locals to attend and become part of their effort towards inclusivity, allyship, and positive community action.
