Spotsylvania man charged with weekend shooting death of roomate

From the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office:

On December 18, 2021 at approximately 2:10 AM, Spotsylvania County 911 Center received a report of a shooting in the 6600 block of Wagon Drive in the Meadows Mobile Home Park. Deputies arrived and found a 28-year-old Spotsylvania man suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body.

life saving measures, the male succumbed to his injuries while on scene. The shooter was identified as the homeowner, Terrence Oliver Smith 37-years of age. It was reported by Mr. Smith that he thought someone was breaking into his home and he fired several rounds through the door striking the victim identified as Dequan Calvin Thomas. Detectives learned that the victim was the roommate of Mr. Smith.

After a thorough investigation and consultation with the Commonwealth’s Attorney Office, Terrence Smith was charged with 2nd Degree Murder, Possession of Firearm after being convicted of a felony, possession of a stolen firearm (stolen from Stafford County in May of 2021), discharge a firearm from a dwelling causing death, and use of a firearm while committing a felony. Mr. Smith was incarcerated under no bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
