It’s John Bevard’s habit to buy three Virginia Lottery tickets at a time. That’s how the Mineral man happened to buy an Extreme Millions ticket while he was at the Gulf Express on Davis Highway in Mineral.

When he scratched it, he didn’t recognize the characters on the ticket, so he showed it to the store clerk.

The clerk took a look and said, “You won a million dollars!”

Extreme Millions features prizes ranging from $30 to $10 million, including a $1 million second prize. The $10 million prize is the largest prize offered in any Virginia Lottery Scratcher game.

Bevard had the choice of taking the full $1 million over 30 years or a one-time cash option of $657,030 before taxes. He chose the cash option. The store receives a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

The odds of winning the $10 million top prize are 1 in 2,937,600. Bevard’s win is the ninth second prize claimed in this game, which means three more $1 million prizes remain unclaimed.

Bevard said he’ll save his winnings for retirement.
