VDOT says the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing opens in May 2022, and the I-95 Northbound crossing opens in 2024. Six new lanes over our busiest section of I-95 in the region, Rt. 3 to Rt.17 area. These projects will both interface with 95 Express Lanes, which are being extended south over 10 miles to the Rt. 17 interchange area in Stafford County.
VDOT says the travel lanes in the I-95 Rappahannock River Crossing project footprint — as depicted in this rendering of the finished project in 2024 — will be non-tolled. I-95 traffic will not be charged a toll for using either the “local” lanes (we call them collector-distributor lanes, since they collect/distribute traffic to destinations at local interchanges) or the “through” lanes in the median intended for traffic traveling through our region. North of this project, north of exit 133 (Rt. 17) in Stafford, travelers will have the option to enter 95 Express Lanes, which will be two reversible, high-occupancy toll lanes in the median. Vehicles with 3 occupants or more can travel in Express Lanes toll-free, and vehicles with 1-2 occupants can choose to pay a variable toll.
