The slave block was removed early Friday morning from the corner of William and Charles Streets by Fredericksburg staff. A city press release says moving it was done early morning to minimize pedestrian and vehicular conflicts later in the day. Stabilizing straps, weights and mechanical equipment were used to lift the freed stone onto a custom-designed pallet to support the 800-pound artifact. Dovetail Cultural Resources Group provided oversight.
