Looking for a distraction from social distancing? It’s the perfect time to break out the trowel and watering can and dig in the dirt. As most area residents hunker at home during the age of coronavirus, backyard gardens are growing in popularity as people flock to a hobby that provides exercise, fresh air and healthy food.
And when area residents purchase their plants through Rappahannock Adult Activities, they also help adults with disability flourish. Because of the global pandemic and the ensuing state of emergency, RAAI’s annual plant sale won’t be quite the same—instead of browsing rows of colorful flowers, hardy vegetables and fragrant herbs, the sale’s organizers ask customers to choose their plants from an online order form and then call or email those selections and arrange a time to arrive at 750 Kings Highway for curbside assistance.
“We’ve got a wonderful selection of quality plants, including stunning hanging baskets and a wide variety of tomatoes,” said Horticulture Program Manager Andy Lynn. “We look forward to being part of our community’s spring traditions, even if those look a little bit different this year.”
Curbside pickup will be available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. An order form can be downloaded from the agency’s website, www.rappahannockareacsb.org. For more than 40 years, RAAI day support services have helped caregivers be able to maintain jobs and hobbies, while providing adults with developmental disability chances to develop hobbies and friendships. RAAI serves more than 160 individuals in the City of Fredericksburg and counties of Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford. The program is closed during the state of emergency, which makes this annual fundraiser even more important than ever. The proceeds will help RAAI support adults with disability and their families.
