Born January 14, 1806 in Spotsylvania near the Chancellorsville Battlefield. Maury was an American astronomer, United States Navy officer, historian, oceanographer, meteorologist, cartographer, author, geologist, and educator.
Known as a Scientist of the Seas, Father of Modern Oceanography and Naval Meteorology, Pathfinder of the Seas.
