Apple devices are some of the most helpful tools for millions of people worldwide. Users can back up their content via the iTunes and iCloud® services. The iTunes service, which stores information on a Mac® computer or PC, serves multiple functions including playing and storing music and videos, as well as other multimedia content.
If a device is not properly saving content to the iTunes service, this could be for a variety of reasons. When the iTunes service is not backing up your Apple device properly, follow these steps to ensure that everything is working properly.
- Download the latest version of the iTunes service.
- Storage is only as big as your device. Determine how much storage is available on your Mac computer or PC.
- Download the latest version of the iOS® operating system. Your operating system should be updated automatically if you are using iOS 12® operating system or newer. But, if your operating system is an older version, you will have to check which version you are currently using.
- Connect your device to access the iTunes service.
- Turn off your devices and begin again.
It is important to be aware that an iTunes service backup does NOT include the following:
- Content from the iTunes and App Stores or PDFs downloaded directly to Apple Books accounts
- Content synced from the iTunes service, like imported MP3s or CDs, videos, books, and photos
- Data already stored in the iCloud service, like iCloud Photos, iMessages, and text (SMS) and multimedia (MMS) messages
- Face ID® or Touch ID® feature settings
- Apple Pay® service information and settings
- Apple Mail® data
- Activity, Health, and Keychain data
iTunes service users can also encrypt backups within the iTunes account. The iTunes service doesn’t encrypt your backups by default. Encrypted iTunes service backups can include information that unencrypted iTunes service backups won’t include, such as:
- Your saved passwords
- Wi-Fi settings
- Website history
- Health data
To encrypt a backup in the iTunes service for the first time, turn on the password-protected Encrypt backup option. The iTunes service will then automatically make encrypted backups for that device until the device is instructed otherwise.
Whenever asked to create a password, be sure to write down this password because you will not be able to access your iTunes content without this information.
If all else fails, consider establishing an iCloud back up. Restoring data and information from the iCloud service is considered a reliable and universal storage method.
