From Germanna Community College:
Germanna Community College has received a grant for nearly $200,000 as part of a new $2.75 million Virginia Community College System investment in the FastForward Virginia workforce training programs to help more Virginians earn workforce credentials for new careers and better provide for themselves and their family. The grants develop new and expand existing high-demand training programs.
GCC’s $197,879 grant is for National Center for Construction Educational and Research Core Craft in metalworking. Germanna’s project is designed to help meet regional employer needs by preparing students for success in a variety of industrial technology fields.
Project funding is designed to enhance student access to training and earning credentials in various NIMS (National Institute of Metalworking Skills) skillsets. The funding will help cover the costs of purchasing new training equipment, updating curriculum, training new faculty, developing and disseminating marketing materials, and purchasing instructional materials and supplies. The project also includes developing curriculum in Spanish to better meet the needs of the Spanish- speaking community. Funds also provide for part-time bilingual staff to serve as intake/service coordinators who will work directly with students and create templates and processes for these new credential programs.
“Additionally, the funds will allow us to update the training curriculum,” said Germanna Associate Vice President for Workforce & Professional Development Martha O’Keefe, “as well as videotape and edit the instructional modules and package them for online delivery. This will allow 24/7 access, thereby reaching a wider audience.” The online instructional modules will be available in both English and Spanish.
The specific NIMS credentials students can earn include: Maintenance Operator, Basic Mechanical Skills, Hydraulic Systems, Pneumatic Systems, Electrical Systems, and Electrical Control Systems. NCCER Core Craft certification is also part of the funded project. Students earning the credentials can prepare for “bright outlook” jobs including: Automated Equipment Technicians, Millwrights, Machinery Maintenance Workers, Maintenance and Repair Workers, and a variety of Construction and Extraction Occupations.
The face to face classes will be available at Germanna’s FredCAT Center in Central Park, Daniel Technology Center in Culpeper; as well as being accessible online.
“These grants reaffirm our commitment to helping Virginians start, or re-start their careers” said Glenn DuBois, chancellor of Virginia’s Community Colleges. “More than 16,000 postsecondary credentials have been awarded since FastForward launched three years ago and Virginia’s workforce is stronger because of it. Our graduates typically boost their take home pay by 25-50%, in a matter of weeks not years. We want to make sure every Virginian knows about this life-changing opportunity.”
“This capacity building will touch every region of Virginia and help build a skilled workforce for years to come,” said Sharon Morrissey, VCCS senior vice chancellor for academic and workforce programs. “This investment allows our colleges to increase their capacity for providing FastForward training through instructor salaries, materials and supplies, curriculum development and much more.”
