I-95 Northbound

Exit 118 (Route 606/Thornburg) in Spotsylvania County

Monday – Wednesday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Tuesday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.

Expect a single lane closure on I-95 northbound at Exit 118 (Route 606/Thornburg) for construction activities for the Mudd Tavern Road overpass replacement and interchange improvement project.

Exit 118 Off-Ramp Traffic Shift

On Thursday, March 28, traffic exiting I-95 northbound at Exit 118 will be shifted onto a new off-ramp after the morning rush hour.

Ramp traffic exiting I-95 northbound will intersect with Mallard Road at a new traffic signal. The new traffic signal will be placed into full color operation on Thursday during the traffic shift. View an online map of the new off-ramp and temporary traffic pattern in the work zone. Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road) traffic will continue to use the existing on-ramp to access I-95 northbound. A new northbound on-ramp will open when the project is complete in summer 2019. Message boards are posted to alert motorists to the upcoming traffic shift.

Exit 133 (Route 17/Falmouth) to Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) in Stafford County)

Monday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.
Friday, 10 p.m. – 7 a.m. Saturday

Expect a single lane closure on I-95 northbound at mile marker 129, which is just before Exit 130 (Route 3/Fredericksburg) in Fredericksburg, and mile marker 136 (Exit 136/Centreport Parkway) in Stafford County. The lane closure is needed for preliminary engineering work for the future Interstate 95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension project.

Exit 133 (Route 17/Falmouth) in Stafford County

Tuesday – Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Expect a single lane closure on I-95 northbound near Exit 133, just north of the Rappahannock River bridge in Stafford. Expect heavy truck traffic between mile marker 132 and mile marker 134. Be alert to trucks slowing down to enter or exit the median at various construction entrances throughout the work zone. The work zone is needed for construction activities for the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing.

Exit 140 (Route 630/Courthouse Road)

Monday – Thursday, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Monday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.
Friday, 10 p.m. – 7 a.m. Saturday

Expect a daytime single lane closure on I-95 northbound near Exit 140 (Route 630/Courthouse Road) in Stafford County on Monday through Thursday for preliminary engineering work for the future I-95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension project and the Exit 140 diverging diamond interchange project.

On Wednesday and Thursday evenings, I-95 northbound will be reduced to two lanes at 9 p.m. and a single lane between 10:30 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. to allow crews to remove overhead work platforms used to build the new I-95 overpasses.

I-95 Southbound

Exit 148 (Quantico)

Wednesday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 10 a.m.
Thursday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.

Expect a single lane closure on I-95 southbound near Exit 148/Quantico in Prince William County for geotechnical boring work for the future I-95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension project.

Exit 140 (Route 630/Courthouse Road)

Monday – Tuesday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.

On Monday and Tuesday evenings, I-95 southbound will be reduced to two lanes at 9 p.m. and a single lane between 10:30 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. to allow crews to remove overhead work platforms used to build the new I-95 overpasses.

Near Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) to Exit 130 (Route 3/Fredericksburg)

Monday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 10 a.m.
Thursday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.
Friday – Saturday, 10 p.m. – 7 a.m.

Expect alternating single lane closures on I-95 southbound from mile marker 135, just south of Exit 136/Centreport Parkway in Stafford County to Exit 130 (Route 3) in Fredericksburg for construction activities for the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing and for the future Interstate 95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension project.

Exit 118 (Route 606/Thornburg) in Spotsylvania County

Wednesday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Expect a single lane closure on I-95 southbound at Exit 118 (Route 606/Thornburg) for construction activities for the Mudd Tavern Road overpass replacement and interchange improvement project.

Pothole Repair: Fredericksburg Area

Crews will continue working extended hours across the Fredericksburg area next week, on Monday through Friday, to repair potholes on numerous state-maintained roads. Asphalt plants have opened for the season, allowing crews to make permanent repairs to potholes using hot-mix asphalt, which creates a more durable surface for motorists.

Motorists are asked to be alert for these mobile work zones across the region, and to reduce their speed and give crews space to work.

Americans with Disabilities Act Ramp Repair

Monday ˗˗ Friday, 9 a.m. ˗˗ 5 p.m. Crews will repair sidewalk ramps and pedestrian crossings on these routes for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). There may be temporary, alternating shoulder closures or flagging operations with this work. Motorists should be alert to a mobile work zone with crews and construction equipment at the following intersections:

King George County
Route 3 (Kings Highway) between Cherry Street and Courthouse Road (Crosswalk at Trinity United Methodist Church)

Middlesex County
Route 17 Business at the Saluda Post Office and BB&T Bank

Stafford County Work Zones

Route 3 Eastbound and Westbound 24-Hour Lane Closure
Route 3 traffic between Leonard Road and James Ashby Parkway has been reduced to a single lane for a Stafford County utility project.

Route 218 (White Oak Road)
Wednesday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Drivers should expect delays and flagging operations on Route 218 (White Oak Road) between Red Baron Park Road to the King George County line for a mobile operation to install centerline rumble strips followed by striping. Expect slow moving equipment near the mobile work zone. A flagging crew will alternate one-way traffic near the work zone.

Route 630 (Courthouse Road) Widening Work:
Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect brief delays with alternating, one-way traffic at the following locations:

Courthouse Road between Cedar Lane to Walpole Street and Austin Ridge Drive to Red Oak Drive.

Winding Creek Road between Courthouse Road and Embrey Mill Road

Route 630 (Courthouse Road) Pothole Patching:
Sunday, March 24, 10 p.m. – 5 a.m. Expect intermittent lane closures on Courthouse Road between Austin Ridge Drive and Red Oak Drive for pothole patching. A flagging crew will direct alternating, one-way traffic in the work zone. Expect overnight delays.

Monday − Friday, 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Stay alert for mobile lane closures. Crews will perform routine maintenance activities at the following locations:

Route 208 (Courthouse Road )
Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Drivers should expect brief delays on Route 208 eastbound from the Spotsylvania County line to the Louisa County line for a mobile operation to install centerline rumble strips followed by striping. Expect slow moving equipment near the mobile work zone.

Mudd Tavern Road
Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Mudd Tavern Road near the interchange for construction. Flaggers will direct drivers through the work zone.

Mallard Road
Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Mallard Road near the interchange for construction. Flaggers will direct drivers through the work zone.

Routine Maintenance
Monday − Friday, 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Stay alert for mobile lane closures. Crews will perform routine maintenance activities at the following locations:

Route 3 (Plank Road) – brush removal
Route 610 (Elys Ford Road) – brush removal
Route 613 (Brock Road) – brush removal

Caroline County Work Zones

Route 1 Northbound and Southbound
Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Drivers should expect brief delays on Route 1 northbound and southbound from the Hanover County line to the Spotsylvania County for a mobile operation to install centerline rumble strips followed by striping. Expect slow moving near the mobile work zone.

Route 207
Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Expect alternating lane closures on eastbound Route 207 between Route 656 and Penola Road to allow crews to make repairs to the bridge over Polecat Creek. Work will be underway through late March 2019, weather permitting.

Route 658 (Jericho Road)
Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Route 658 (Jericho Road) near the Route 601 (Cedar Fork Road) and Route 1 (Jefferson Davis Highway) intersections for pavement repair. A flagging crew will direct drivers in the work zone. Brief delays are possible.

Routine Maintenance
Monday − Friday, 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Stay alert for mobile lane closures. Crews will perform routine maintenance activities at the following locations:

Route 656 (Colemans Mill Road) – shoulder repairs

Caroline County/King George County Work Zone

Route 301 at Rappahannock River (James Madison Bridge)
Monday − Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane on Route 301 northbound and southbound near the James Madison Bridge over the Rappahannock River for a bridge maintenance project. Expect brief delays on the bridge and at the bridge approaches.

King and Queen County Work Zone

Route 14
Tuesday − Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Expect brief delays and a flagging operation on Route 14 between Route 360 (Richmond Tappahannock Highway) and Route 614 (Devils Three Jump Road) for pavement repair. A flagging crew will alternate one-way traffic near the mobile work zone. Be alert to crews working and slow-moving construction equipment within the mobile operation.

Other Fredericksburg District Projects

Stafford County

Route 3 Business and Route 606 (Ferry Road) Intersection
Work is underway to improve this intersection. Motorists should be alert for construction activity on Route 3 Business and on Ferry Road between the CSX railroad crossing and Route 3 Business. For more information about the project, please visit the project page.

Route 608 (Brooke Road): ROAD CLOSED
Brooke Road is closed to through traffic near Eskimo Hill Road. This is a Stafford County project to realign the roadway to improve safety and drainage. The road will reopen by July 2019. For more information about the project and the detour route, please visit the county’s project page.

Spotsylvania County

Route 658 (Mount Olive Road) Bridge Replacement: ROAD CLOSED
Construction is underway to build a replacement bridge on Route 658 (Mount Olive Road) over the North Anna River, which will restore a connection between Hanover County and Spotsylvania County. The new bridge is estimated to open in summer 2019. Visit the project page for additional details.

King and Queen County

Route 660 (Sorghum Road) Bridge Replacement: ROAD CLOSED
Construction is underway to build a replacement bridge on Route 660 (Sorghum Road) over Mill Stream. Crews are removing the existing structurally deficient bridge, which is located between Route 619 (Owens Mill Road) and Route 721 (Newtown Road). A new structure will be installed. Weather permitting, Sorghum Road will re-open in early April 2019.

Emergency Road Repairs: Tropical Storm Michael

Emergency repair work continues to rebuild several state-maintained roads that sustained severe damage during Tropical Storm Michael. These roads require major reconstruction or replacement of pipes and culverts before they can safely be reopened. Emergency procurement methods are being used to expedite repairs.

Estimated construction schedules for the remaining closed roads in Fredericksburg District are listed below:

King William County

Route 662 (Sharon Road): Anticipated to reopen in August 2019. Crews will reconstruct a slope near the road and repair the culvert.

Northumberland County

Route 201 (Courthouse Road): Anticipated to reopen in June 2019. Crews are replacing a damaged set of four 96-inch drainage pipes with a triple set of concrete box culverts, with each culvert measuring 12 feet by 10 feet. The new culverts arrived in early March, and crews are in the process of moving them into place.

Route 634 (Spring Road): Anticipated to reopen in August 2019. Crews are repairing the bridge and replacing a washed out section of road.

Route 642 (Knights Run Road): Anticipated to reopen the week of April 1-5, 2019. Crews have replaced two 60-inch drainage pipes with two 72-inch reinforced concrete drainage pipes.

Westmoreland County

Route 600 (Nomini Grove Road): Anticipated to reopen in August 2019. Crews are repairing a void underneath the road and replacing a washed out section of road.

Route 612 (Antioch Road): Anticipated to reopen to traffic in April 2019, but repairs will continue on site through July 2019. Crews are repairing a void underneath the road and replacing a washed out section of road.

Motorists are reminded to adhere to all road closed signs and barricades, and to follow the posted detour route. Roads have been closed for traveler safety.
