Work is underway to build the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing, a $132 million project to add three southbound lanes to I-95 between the Route 17 interchange in Stafford and the Route 3 interchange in Fredericksburg. The goal is to double lane capacity and reduce delays on the busiest section of I-95 in the Fredericksburg area, which carries an average of 150,000 vehicles a day in both directions.
The new southbound lanes open to traffic in May 2022. Through traffic will be able enter them just south of the Truslow Road overpass and continue past the Route 3 interchange, where travelers can then rejoin the general purpose lanes. The project is also replacing the I-95 northbound and southbound overpasses of Route 17 in Stafford.
Be alert for slow-moving trucks entering and exiting the work zone along I-95 and from Route 17. At Route 17, crews have started to drive piles for the future bridge piers of the new overpass bridges. Down at the Rappahannock River, construction continues on the causeway, where equipment will be staged to start building the new Rappahannock River bridge later this year.
