Virginia State Police Senior Trooper D.M. Fisher is investigating a three-vehicle crash that resulted in 19 adults and children being transported to VCU Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. The crash occurred at approximately 10:13 a.m. Friday (Aug. 31) on Interstate 95 at the 100 mile marker in Hanover County.
Southbound traffic was slowing to a stop when a 2017 Nissan Armada was unable to brake in time and caused a chain reaction crash. The Nissan rear-ended a 2016 Jeep and a 2016 Toyota Camry rear-ended the Nissan. The Nissan Armada and Toyota Camry were family members traveling together to Richmond for the weekend.
The driver of the Toyota Camry, Hadaf Alsamet, 19, of Baltimore, Md., was charged with reckless driving and one count of failure to secure a child. Alsamet was traveling with four passengers. One of the passengers, a 2-year-old, was sharing a seat belt with an adult passenger in the back seat. Alsamet was wearing a seat belt.
The driver of the Nissan Armada, Ebrahim Ahmed, 25, of Jamaica, N.Y., was charged with reckless driving, no valid operator’s license, and four counts of failure to secure a child in a child safety seat. Ahmed was traveling with 10 passengers: one adult; a 17-year-old; and eight under the age of 8 years old. A 4-month-old was sitting in the lap of its mother at the time of the crash. A 4-year-old was not secured in a child safety seat. A 6-year-old and a 7-year-old were not secured in booster seats. A 9-year-old was riding in the back cargo compartment. Ahmed was wearing a seat belt.
The driver of the Jeep, a 51-year-old New Jersey woman, was not injured in the crash. She had two passengers, including a 2-year-old child who was secured in a child safety seat. Neither passenger was injured.
Hanover County Fire and EMS also responded to the scene.
