About the Diaper Bag Program
The Diaper Bag is a Fredericksburg Area Service League Signature Program that provides diapers and diaper wipes to families experiencing diaper need in the Fredericksburg area. Diaper need is defined as the lack of a sufficient supply of diapers to keep an infant or toddler clean, dry and healthy.
The Diaper Bag serves the City of Fredericksburg and surrounding counties of Spotsylvania, Caroline, Stafford and King George (Planning District 16). In Planning District 16 (PD 16) there are over 5,000 children under the age of 6 living below the federal poverty level. A baby uses 6-10 diapers a day, which costs from $90 to $100 a month ($70 -$80 for diapers and $20 for wipes). The total cost to diaper one child for a year is $1,080 to $1,200. Government assistance programs, such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and WIC (Women, Infants and Children), do not offer help with the purchase of diapers or diaper wipes The number of households with children participating in SNAP, is above the national rate of 53% in each PD 16 county and the City of Fredericksburg.
