Interstate 95 Bridge Rehabilitation Project
Work is underway to improve the deck and substructure on several bridges located on I-95 in Stafford County and Spotsylvania County.
Stafford County: I-95 Bridge over Aquia Creek at mile marker 145
The I-95 bridges over Aquia Creek are located just north of Exit 143 (Route 610/Garrisonville) at mile marker 145. The following lanes closures are planned for this week:
I-95 Northbound
Monday – Thursday
- 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. – two lanes closed
Friday
- 10 p.m. – midnight – single lane closed
- Midnight – 4:30 a.m. – two lanes closed
I-95 Southbound
Monday – Thursday
- 9 p.m. – single lane closed
- 10 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. – two lanes closed
- Single lane remains closed until 7 a.m.
Stafford County: I-95 Bridge over Potomac Creek at mile marker 137
The I-95 bridges over Potomac Creek are located just before Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) at mile marker 137.

- 10 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. – two lanes closed
I-95 Southbound
Monday – Thursday
- 9 p.m. – single lane closed

Spotsylvania County: I-95 Bridge over the Ni River at mile marker 121
The I-95 bridge over the Ni River is located just south of Exit 126/Spotsylvania
I-95 northbound and southbound
Friday – Saturday
- 10 p.m. – midnight – single lane closed
- Midnight – 5 a.m. – two lanes closed
Interstate 95 Paving
I-95 paving improvements continue in Stafford on several sections of interstate between Exit 140 (Courthouse Road) and the Prince William County line during July and August. Drivers can expect nighttime delays on Sunday–Thursday evenings.
Interstate 95 northbound
Monday – Friday
- 9 p.m. – single lane closed
- 10 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. – two lanes closed
Interstate 95 (Exit 140/Courthouse Road)
Work is underway to improve the I-95 interchange at Exit 140 (Route 630/Courthouse Road). The project is building a diverging diamond interchange at Exit 140, relocating the Courthouse Road and Route 1 intersection to the south to align with Hospital Center Boulevard, and is widening Courthouse Road to four lanes from Cedar Lane to Ramoth Church Road.
Route 630 (Courthouse Road)
Monday – Thursday, 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. and Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Courthouse Road will be reduced to one lane from Cedar Lane to Walpole Street for grading work.
Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. and Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Courthouse Road between Austin Ridge Drive and Red Oak Drive for grading and pipe work.
Ramoth Church Road
Monday – Thursday, 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. and Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Ramoth Church Road from Courthouse Road to Dog Patch Lane for grading and pipe work. Flaggers will direct drivers in the work zone. Expect brief delays.
Snowbird Lane
Monday – Thursday, 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. and Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Snowbird Lane between Courthouse Road and the dead end to allow trucks to enter and exit the work zone for grading and pipe work.
Winding Creek Road
Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. and Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Winding Creek Road from Courthouse Road to Embrey Mill Road for pipe work.
Woodcutters Road
Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. and Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect alternating, single lane closures on Woodcutters Road between Courthouse Road and Cutstone Drive.
Wyche Road
Monday – Thursday, 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. and Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Wyche Road at Courthouse Road to allow trucks to enter and exit the work zone for grading and pipe work.
Eustace Road
Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., motorists should expect a single lane closure on Eustace Road between Embrey Mill Road and Garrisonville Road while crews install new pavement markings.
Interstate 95 Exit 130/Route 3/Fredericksburg Interchange Improvement Project
Construction is underway to modify the ramps and traffic pattern at the Interstate 95 and Route 3 interchange at Exit 130 in Fredericksburg to enhance safety. Motorists will encounter the following lane closures near Route 3, I-95 at Exit 130 and/or the Central Park shopping area.
Route 3 Eastbound
Monday – Tuesday, 10 p.m. – 4 a.m. The two left lanes on Route 3 eastbound at the I-95 interchange at Exit 130 will be closed to traffic while crews install the new overhead directional signs at the interchange. Motorists should expect brief traffic stops for no more than 15 minutes at a time throughout the night. All lanes will be open to traffic by 4 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Route 3 Westbound
Tuesday – Wednesday, 10 p.m. – 7 a.m. The right lane and shoulder on Route 3 westbound at the I-95 interchange at Exit 130 will be closed to traffic while crews install the new overhead directional signs at the interchange. Motorists should expect brief traffic stops for no more than 15 minutes at a time throughout the night. Work may also require a narrowed I-95 northbound exit ramp. All lanes will be open to traffic by 7 a.m. Wednesday morning.
Interstate 95 Southbound Off-Ramp at Exit 130
Wednesday ˗˗ Thursday, 9 p.m. ˗˗ 6 a.m. The I-95 southbound off-ramp to Route 3 westbound will be reduced to a single lane and motorists on the ramp will experience brief traffic stops for no more than 15 minutes periodically throughout the night while crews install the new overhead directional signs at the interchange. Work is expected to be complete by 6 a.m. Wednesday morning.
Interstate 95 at Exit 118/Mudd Tavern Road Widening and Bridge Replacement Project
Crews are working to improve the interchange on Interstate 95 at Exit 118 (Mudd Tavern Road). The project is building a new I-95 overpass and will improve on and off-ramps on Mudd Tavern Road, Mudd Tavern Road east of I-95, and Mallard Road.
Mallard Road
Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. – noon. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Mallard Road for project construction and storm sewer installation. Flaggers will direct drivers through the work zone.
Stafford County Work Zones
Route 648 (Shelton Shop Road)
Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Crews will be line striping and repairing the pavement at various locations on Shelton Shop Road between Garrisonville Road and Mountain View Road. This is a mobile operation. Expect delays.
Telegraph Road
Telegraph Road is closed to through traffic between Route 1 and the I-95 bridge near Mt. Perry Road for pipe installation. Through traffic will be directed to use the designated detour around the work zone. Residents along Telegraph Road will maintain access to their homes.
Route 1209 (Choptank Road)
24-hour closure, Choptank Road between Wood Drive and Furnace Road is closed for pipe repairs. Access to driveways on Choptank Road will be maintained. Message boards and signs will be posted to notify drivers of the road closure and detour. Project completion is anticipated in late August.
Route 631 (Bells Hill Road)
24-hour closure, Route 631 (Bells Hill Road) remains closed between Virginia Belle Drive and Belle Vine Lane for a slope failure and road damage caused by flooding. VDOT has identified a contractor and a project schedule and cost estimate is under development. VDOT will announce a schedule for re-opening the road as soon as it is available. Road closed barricades and detour signs have been posted to guide motorists. Bells Hill Road remains open at both intersections with Route 1. Travelers seeking to access destinations south of Belle Vine Lane should use the southern intersection of Route 1 and Bells Hill Road to reach their destination.
Spotsylvania County Work Zones
Route 1 at Southpoint Parkway
Sunday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. Motorists should expect brief delays and lane closures on Route 1 southbound at Southpoint Parkway and at various locations along Southpoint Parkway. Crews will be gathering pavement samples at several locations along Southpoint Parkway.
Route 17 (Mills Drive) and Route 609 (Thornton Rolling Road and Jim Morris Road)
A new traffic signal installed on Route 17 (Mills Drive) as part of the intersection improvement project at Route 609 (Thornton Rolling Road and Jim Morris Road) will be placed in full color operation on Tuesday, July 24. The new signal will operate in full color to accommodate the new traffic pattern at the intersection. The signal was activated in flash mode in early July to allow motorists to adjust to the upcoming change. Message boards and signs will be posted to alert motorists to the new signal and traffic pattern at the intersection.
Route 639 (Leavells Road)
Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Motorists should expect single lane closures at various locations on Route 639 (Leavells Road) between Route 3 and Route 620 (Harrison Road) for guardrail installation.
Route 636 (Mine Road)
Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Expect mobile single lane and turn lane closures on Mine Road between Route 1 and Benchmark Road. Crews will continue painting fresh pavement markings and installing raised pavement markers.
Caroline County Work Zones
Route 301 at the James Madison Bridge
Monday – Friday, 6 a.m. – 6 p.m. Expect single lane closures on the bridge for bridge repair work.
Route 2
Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Motorists should expect brief delays on Route 2 from just north of Route 207 Business/Route 301 Business to just north of Route 606 (Stonewall Jackson Road). Crews will be paving in this area.
King George County Work Zones
Route 205
Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Single lane closure. Expect alternating one-way traffic from the Westmoreland County line to Route 301 for milling, paving and pavement marking.
Route 218 (Caledon Road)
Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Crews will be removing and installing new guardrail on Route 218 from Route 600 to just east of Vertical Ridge Road.Expect mobile lane closures and direction by flagging crew.
Route 301 (James Madison Parkway)
Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Expect single lane closures on Route 301 northbound from the Route 607/Route 625 intersection to just north of Route 218 for paving work.
Route 630
Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Crews will be patching on Route 630 from just north of Route 660 to Route 3.
