Fredericksburg police investigated a possible social media threat against Walker-Grant Middle School that surfaced on Thursday night, but it turned out to be a misunderstanding.
Captain Rick Pennock of the Fredericksburg Police Department said a parent called the police and a school administrator about the post around 11 p.m. Thursday night.
The police contacted the administration and began an investigation. Police officers and detectives were at the school when buses arrived Friday morning and interviewed some students when they arrived at school.
“It was basically a misunderstanding about some kids who reposted information about the Maryland shooting,” Captain Pennock said. “Someone said they hope it never happens here, someone else responded that it could happen here, and it got misconstrued. We don’t believe there was any criminal intent in the post.”
Pennock said that the department had officers and detectives at the school when students arrived Friday morning, and detectives talked to students involved in reposting the article. No arrests were made.
“This is a situation just like the federal government tells us about terrorism situations,” Pennock said. “If you see something, say something, and we can investigate.”
Walker-Grant’s administration sent a letter about the situation to parents and posted it on their Web site Friday.
