The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will soon begin work to replace a structurally deficient bridge over Glady Run on Route 649 (Seays Road) in Spotsylvania County.
VDOT will close Seays Road near the bridge over Glady Run at 9 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 18. The bridge is located between Robert E. Lee Drive and Mastin Lane.
A detour will be in place for approximately eight weeks, weather permitting, while construction is underway.
Signs will be posted along the recommended detour route, which is approximately 10 miles:
Route 606 (Post Oak Road)
Route 612 (Pawmunkey Road)
Route 608 (West Carthapin Road)
Route 608 (Robert E. Lee Drive)
Message boards will be posted next week to alert drivers to the upcoming bridge work and detour.
Crews will replace the existing steel beams, deck and guardrail with a 46-foot long concrete slab bridge on new concrete abutments. The length of the two-lane bridge will almost be doubled following this project.
The existing bridge, constructed in 1970, is a 24-foot long and 23-foot wide structure. The posted weight restriction is 15 tons for single-unit vehicles and 22 tons for tractor-trailers. The current weight limit posting restricts heavier emergency service vehicles from using the bridge.
Following final inspection, the current weight posting is expected to be removed and will allow legal load vehicles including all emergency service vehicles to use the new structure, improving response time in the Post Oak area of the county.
Seays Road carries an average of 764 vehicles a day, according to a 2016 VDOT traffic count.
