Interstate 95 Southbound

(New) Monday ˗˗ Thursday,  9 p.m.˗˗ 4:30 a.m. A single, left lane on I-95 southbound near Exit 143 (Route 610/Garrisonville) will be blocked to allow crews to begin a milling and paving operation as part of the Express Lanes southern terminus extension.  Expect brief delays.

(Update) Tuesday ˗˗ Friday, 9 p.m. ˗˗ 7 a.m. A single lane on I-95 southbound near Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) will be blocked to allow crews to inspect the bridge over the Potomac Creek. Virginia State Police will assist with traffic control. Expect brief delays.

Route 17 Southbound

(New) Sunday, 9 p.m. ˗˗ 5 a.m. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane on Route 17 southbound between Commerce Parkway and McWhirt Loop to allow crews to work on overhead signage. Expect brief delays.

 

Route 630 (Courthouse Road)

(New) Friday, Motorists should anticipate a reduced speed limit of 35 mph on Courthouse Road between Woodcutters Road and Cedar Lane. The temporary speed limit will be enforced during construction to widen the road and reconfigure Exit 140 interchange, which is expected to be complete by July 2020.

Monday ˗˗ Thursday, 8 a.m. ˗˗ 3:30 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. ˗˗ 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Courthouse Road between Austin Ridge Drive and Ramoth Church Road for clearing, tree trimming, grading and pipe work. This work is part of the project to widen the road. Flaggers will direct motorists through the work zone. Expect delays.

 

Route 641 (Onville Road)

(New) Monday ˗˗ Tuesday, 9 a.m. ˗˗ 3 p.m. Expect alternating, single lane closures on Onville Road to allow crews to work on the entrance to a new subdivision, Onville Estates.

 

Stafford County Restriping

Monday ˗˗ Friday, 7 a.m. ˗˗ 7 p.m. Motorists should anticipate lane closures or alternating traffic with flagging operations on several primaries and multiple secondary routes throughout Stafford County including Route 1, Route 218, 607 and 627.  Crews are restriping existing line markings on various roads. Motorists should expect slow moving construction equipment and delays near the mobile work zone. Motorists are encouraged to avoid crossing over freshly painted lines. The paint will be wet and may adhere to vehicle. The mobile work zone will periodically pull over to allow congestion to clear.

 

Routine Maintenance

Spotsylvania County

Interstate 95 Southbound

Monday ˗˗ Friday, 9 p.m. ˗˗  4:30 a.m. Two lanes on I-95 southbound at the Ni River Bridge will be closed to allow crews to continue the bridge improvement project. The Ni River Bridge is located at mile marker 121, just south of Exit 126/Massaponax. A single lane will be closed at 9 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. All lanes will be open to traffic by 4:30 a.m. each day. Motorists should expect overnight delays.

 

Interstate 95 Northbound

Monday ˗˗ Friday, 9 p.m. ˗˗ 4:30 a.m. Two lanes on I-95 northbound at the Ni River Bridge will be closed to allow crews to continue the bridge improvement project. The Ni River Bridge is located at mile marker 121, just north of Exit 118/Thornburg. A single lane will be closed at 9 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. All lanes will be open to traffic by 4:30 a.m. each day. Motorists should expect overnight delays.

 

Route 3

(Update) Sunday ˗˗ Thursday, 7:30 p.m. ˗˗ 5:30 a.m. Expect single, alternating lane closures on westbound Route 3 from Gordon Road to Spotswood Furnace Lane for a milling and paving operation. Flaggers will direct drivers through the work zone.  Expect brief overnight delays.

 

Subdivision Street Paving

(New) Monday ˗˗ Friday, 7 a.m .˗˗ 5 p.m. Motorists should anticipate lane closures or alternating traffic with flagging operations in several neighborhoods in the Lee’s Hill area off Mine Road for a paving operation. Crews will begin by working to repair pavement in Arrington Heights, Watford Village, Cavalry Ridge and Lee’s Crossing subdivisions. This project will improve the ride for motorists and enhance the condition of the streets with new asphalt after pavement repairs are made. Expect brief delays.

 

Secondary Route Restriping

(New) Wednesday, 6:30 a.m. ˗˗6:30 p.m. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane on Route 301 northbound and southbound from near the bridge over the Rappahannock River for work related to the bridge rehabilitation project. Expect brief delays on the bridge and at the bridge approaches.

 

Essex County

Route 17 near the Downing Bridge

(New) Wednesday ˗˗ Thursday, 6 p.m. ˗˗ 9 a.m. and Monday ˗˗ Friday, 9 a.m. ˗˗2 p.m. Motorists should be alert for a mobile work zone with crews and construction equipment at various locations along Route 17 between Queen Street and Richmond Beach Road. Crews will make repairs to the handicapped accessible sidewalk ramps and pedestrian crossings in the town of Tappahannock. There may be temporary, intermittent lane closures with this work.

 

Route 17 Southbound

(Update) Sunday ˗˗ Wednesday, 7 p.m. ˗˗ 6 a.m. Expect alternating, single lane closures on Route 17 southbound from White Oak Drive to Richmond Beach Road for a milling and paving operation. Virginia State Police with assist with traffic control.  Expect brief overnight delays.

 

Secondary Route Paving

(Update) Monday ˗˗ Friday, 7 a.m. ˗˗ 7 p.m. Motorists should anticipate lane closures or alternating traffic with flagging operations on various low volume secondary routes throughout Essex County for a paving operation. Routes to be surfaced treated over the week include: 631, 632 and 659.

 

King George County

Route 301 (James Madison Parkway) near Commerce Drive (Gate B at Dahlgren)

Monday ˗˗ Friday, 9 a.m. ˗˗ 3:30 p.m. A single right lane on northbound Route 301 (James Madison Parkway) will be blocked near Commerce Drive and Potomac Drive with construction underway to extend the existing right lane from northbound Route 301 to the Gate B entrance to Naval Support Activity South Potomac at Dahlgren.

 

Route 625 (Salem Church Road)

Monday ˗˗ Friday, 7 a.m. ˗˗ 5:30 p.m. Motorists can expect one-way traffic controlled by flaggers on a portion of Route 625 (Salem Church Road), east of Route 650 (Welcome Lane). Crews are working to realign, widen and improve drainage along Salem Church Road.

 

Route 676 (Rectory Lane)

(New) Monday, 7 a.m. ˗˗ 7 p.m. Motorists can expect one-way, alternating traffic on Rectory Lane for a paving operation. Flaggers will direct drivers through the work zone. Expect brief delays.

Northumberland County

Route 360 at Academic Lane

(New) Wednesday, 4 a.m. till 12 p.m. Thursday, 24 hours, Motorists can expect alternating, single lane closures and flagging operations at the intersection of Route 360 (Northumberland Highway) and Academic Lane  as work continues to improve and widen the intersection.

 

Highway Improvement Projects

City of Fredericksburg

Interstate 95 at Route 3 (Exit 130)

Construction is underway to improve safety on Interstate 95 and Route 3 at the Exit 130 interchange in the city of Fredericksburg. The project will modify the interchange ramps and lower crash risk by eliminating conflict points where vehicles currently merge and weave. Motorists should be prepared for lane closures, construction activity, and temporary traffic shifts on Route 3 and I-95 at Exit 130 through January 2019, when the project is expected to be complete.

Route 1 Bridge Rehabilitation Project at Hazel Run COMPLETE

Work to improve the Route 1 bridge over Hazel Run in the city of Fredericksburg is complete. The bridge is located on Route 1 between Idlewood Boulevard and Kings Mill Drive.

 

Stafford County

I-95 Express Lanes Southern Terminus Extension

Construction is underway to extend 95 Express Lanes in Stafford County. The approximate 2.5 mile extension will carry traffic beyond the flyover ramp where 95 Express Lanes currently end, just north of Exit 143/Route 610 (Garrisonville Road). The new southbound exit ramp is scheduled to open by early 2018, and the northbound entrance ramp will open in summer 2018.

I-95/Route 630 (Courthouse Road) Widening and Interchange Relocation

Preliminary geotechnical work is underway on a project to improve the I-95 interchange at Exit 140 (Route 630/Courthouse Road). The project includes building a diverging diamond interchange at Exit 140, relocating the Courthouse Rd. and Rt. 1 intersection to the south to align with Hospital Center Boulevard, widen Courthouse Rd. to four lanes, and add a traffic signal at the entrance to Colonial Forge High School. Construction to widen Courthouse Road will begin in summer 2017, and the entire project is expected to be complete by summer 2020.

Route 610 Widening Project

Stafford County is widening Route 610 from four to six lanes between Onville Road and Eustace Road. Utility relocation is underway.

 

Spotsylvania County

Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road) Interstate 95 Overpass Replacement and Road Improvements

The project to build a new I-95 overpass on Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road), provide improvements to interstate ramps, Mudd Tavern Road east of I-95 and Mallard Road is underway. Motorists should be alert to construction crews and equipment on I-95 between mile marker 119 and Exit 118 (Route 606/Thornburg), Mudd Tavern Road, and Mallard Road. Construction for the $22.4 million project is expected to be complete by September 2019.

Route 1 and Route 620 (Harrison Road)

Construction to build additional turn lanes and extend existing turn lanes is underway at the intersection of Route 1 and Harrison Road. Motorists should be alert for construction crews and equipment. Project completion is May 2018.

Route 608 (Massaponax Church Road)

A section of Massaponax Church Road remains closed. Message boards are posted along the detour route on Massaponax Church Road, Route 1 and Route 17.  A Spotsylvania county capital project is underway to improve Massaponax Church Road near Route 17 (Mills Drive). Crews are working to improve the roadway alignment by removing two sharp, blind curves and adding shoulders. Drainage improvements will also be made.

Route 1 and Route 632 (Hickory Ridge Road) COMPLETE

Construction is complete at the intersection of Route 1 (Jefferson Davis Highway) and Route 632 (Hickory Ridge Road) to improve traffic flow by adding and extending turn lanes. Motorists should be alert to crews working along the shoulders at the intersection.

 

Caroline County

Route 17 and Route 301 Intersection

Crews are upgrading the existing signal equipment at the intersection of Route 17 (Tidewater Trail) and Route 301 (A.P. Hill Boulevard).  The modernized signal equipment will be fastened to mast arms from signal poles and will be aligned properly with the travel lanes. Most construction work will occur outside of travel lanes until spring 2017. The project is expected to be complete in fall 2017.

Route 662 (Gregory Road) Bridge Replacement

Crews will begin replacing the structurally deficient bridge over Reedy Creek on Gregory Road. A detour will be in place for approximately six weeks while construction is underway. Crews will replace the existing steel beams, deck and guardrail with a 40-foot long concrete slab bridge on new concrete abutments. The length of the two-lane bridge will almost be doubled following this project. New bridge delineators will also be installed. Bridge delineators are small traffic signs to provide night reflection and help guide traffic along the new bridge. Following final inspection of the bridge, the current weight limit posting is expected to be removed.

Town of Bowling Green Sidewalk Project

A concrete sidewalk repair project is underway on Main Street in the Town of Bowling Green through August 21. Crews will be working Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Pedestrians can expect to see work on both sides of Main Street between East Broaddus Avenue and Milford Street. They will always have access to a sidewalk along one side of Main Street.

 

Caroline County/King George County

Route 301 at Rappahannock River

Bridge rehabilitation is underway on the James Madison Memorial Bridge over the Rappahannock River. Maintenance will occur below the bridge deck and includes repairing concrete, replacing bearings, shoring up rip-rap on the slope, and replacing navigation lights. All lanes are currently open on the bridge, but single lane closures will be in place periodically. Project completion is October 2017.

 

Gloucester County

Route 662 (Allmondsville Road) Bridge Replacement

Crews are replacing a structurally deficient bridge on Allmondsville Road over Fox Creek. The road is closed to through traffic at the bridge during construction. Motorists should follow the posted signs along the detour route. The project will be completed in April 2018.

 

King and Queen County

Route 611 (Tastine Road)

Tastine Road will be closed to through traffic while crews replace the existing underground culverts for approximately 30 days. Crews will replace three culverts located under Tastine Road at Tastine Swamp.  The existing corrugated metal pipes will be upgraded to reinforced concrete pipes. Motorists should use the most convenient alternate route while work is underway

 

Lancaster County/Middlesex County

Robert. O. Norris Bridge

Temporary traffic signals are in full operation mode at the center spans of the Norris Bridge on Route 3 between Lancaster and Middlesex counties. Two temporary traffic signals control one-way, alternating traffic at the bridge’s center spans 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Crews are using the closed lane to paint the center spans of the bridge over the Rappahannock River. The signals will remain in place until the end of the painting project in June 2018.

 

Northumberland County

Route 360 (Northumberland Highway)

Construction is underway to extend the existing left turn lane and construct an additional left turn lane on Route 360 (Northumberland Highway) at Academic Lane.  Motorists can expect periodic lane closures on Route 360 throughout the day, Monday through Friday.  The Route 360 and Academic Lane intersection is located near the Northumberland County high school, middle school and elementary school campus.  The project will enhance safety at the intersection that serves the campus and improve roadway drainage in the area.  Work is expected to be complete in October 2017.
