Are You Ready for Super Tuesday in Virginia?

by | Sep 26, 2016 | Government

Compiled by Susan Larson.

Virginia will award 95 Democrat delegates and 46 Republican delegates based on the March 1, 2016, presidential primary vote. That’s the third most of any state on Super Tuesday, according to The Economist.

Virginia is one of 17 states with an “open” primary, which means you don’t have to be registered with a particular political party to vote in that party’s primary. However, Virginia law allows you to vote in only one political party primary election when multiple political party primary elections are held on the same day — as on March 1, 2016. Each primary — Democrat and Republican — has a separate ballot listing different candidates. “The voter must indicate which ballot they would like to receive,” the Virginia State Board of Elections said.

The Republican presidential primary “statement of affiliation” passed by the Virginia State Board of Elections on December 16, 2015, has been rescinded
