The steps on which President Abraham Lincoln is said to have once stood outside the former National Bank Building have been donated to the Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center (FAMCC).
Mike Adams, who purchased the bank property, and FoodE owners Beth Black, Joy Crump and Jeremy Harrison, made the donation when it was determined during building renovations the worn steps needed to be removed for guests’ safety. FoodE moved to the first floor of the historic building in August.
The steps have been moved to the Frejus Sister City Rose Garden, outside the north entrance of the museum at 907 Princess Anne St.
“We’re working with the city to install a pathway, railings and an interpretive sign at the top of the steps,” said Sara Poore, the museum’s executive director. Visitors will be able to stand on the steps to read about their history.
The cost for the total project is $20,000, Poore said. The FAMCC is collecting funds online. Donations may also be mailed to P.O. Box 922, Fredericksburg, Va., 22404.
Poore said the museum is also working with the city toward beautification of the garden, and they are considering the addition of elements that would honor all of Fredericksburg’s sister city partnerships — Este, Italy, Schwetzingen, Germany, Prince’s Town, Ghana, Kathmandu, Nepal, and Frejus, France.
