Fredericksburg City Council honored Karen Hedelt for her 35 years of service during their August 9, 2016, meeting.
Hedelt retired at the end of July from her position as director of Economic Development and Tourism. She began with the department in 1981 as a media liaison, and was promoted from interim to permanent director in 2009.
Family and friends filled half of City Council Chambers to watch Mayor Mary Katherine Greenlaw and just-retired City Manager Bev Cameron read a proclamation and present Hedelt with a watch.
“As I’ve always said, there are bigger places than Fredericksburg, but none better,” Hedelt said.
