Committee members review disciplinary cases as requested by the State Bar, and make recommendations as to what actions the State Bar Disciplinary Board should take in response to a complaint against an attorney. “Our review comes only after the State Bar has done significant investigation into a specific matter,” Girvan said. “Lay members are non-attorneys who provide an outside perspective to disciplinary circumstances we’re required to review.”
The Virginia State Bar is a state agency that protects the public by educating and assisting lawyers to practice ethically and competently, and by disciplining those who violate Supreme Court’s Rules of Professional Conduct.
Girvan said she was nominated for the volunteer position by a local attorney when a vacancy became available. She will serve for three years.
