City of Fredericksburg
Fall Hill Avenue – Traffic Switch
(New) Thursday, 10 a.m. – noon. Traffic Switch. Fall Hill Avenue will be reduced to a single travel lane between the Rappahannock Canal and the entrance to Crestview Apartments. Motorists will be shifted slightly into new travel lanes. Motorists should follow direction from a flagging crew and stay alert for a new traffic pattern. Brief traffic stops up to 5 minutes at a time may be needed for line painting.
Fall Hill Avenue
Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. – noon. Motorists should expect intermittent lane closures on Fall Hill Avenue between Carl D. Silver Parkway and the Rappahannock Canal for construction activity. Flaggers will direct motorists through the work zone.
Mary Washington Boulevard
Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. – noon. Motorists should expect intermittent lane closures on Mary Washington Boulevard between Hospital Drive and Sam Perry Boulevard for construction activity. Flaggers will direct motorists through the work zone.
Stafford County
95 Express Lanes (North of Exit 143/Garrisonville Road)
(New) Construction is underway on the project that will extend the 95 Express Lanes 2.5 miles beyond the flyover ramp where the express lanes currently end, just north of Exit 143 at Route 610 (Garrisonville Road). For the next few weeks motorists can expect to see crews working in the median. Work includes the installation of temporary concrete barriers along the northbound and southbound shoulders on I-95 and tree clearing. Drivers should expect reduced inside shoulders in both directions and should stay alert for slow-moving construction vehicles entering and exiting the travel lanes. Work requiring lane closures will be performed during off-peak travel times.
Route 17
(Update) Sunday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 5 a.m. Crews will continue paving and line striping on Route 17 northbound and southbound between McLane Drive and Stafford Lakes Parkway. Motorists should expect single lane closures in both directions and intermittent closures of turn lanes, entrances and crossovers in the work zone. This work is in connection with the Route 17 Widening Project.
Route 218
(New) Sunday and Monday, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. Crews will be installing pavement markings and stop bars on Route 218 eastbound from Carter Street to just east of Chatham Heights Road. Motorists should expect brief delays in the work zone.
Route 1
(New) Sunday and Monday, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. Crews will be installing pavement markings and stop bars on Route 1 northbound from the Falmouth Intersection to Route 652 (Truslow Road). Motorists should expect brief delays in the work zone.
Route 17 Business
(New) Sunday and Monday, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. Crews will be installing pavement markings and stop bars on Route 17 Business from Route 1 to Route 1008 (Wynne Drive). Motorists should expect brief delays in the work zone.
Route 633 (Arkendale Road)
(New) Beginning Monday, July 25 the railroad crossing on Arkendale Road will be closed to traffic from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. for rail improvements. The crossing will be re-opened to traffic overnight.Traffic at the intersection of Route 633 (Arkendale Road) and Route 658 (Brent Point Road) will use a temporary railroad crossing during the closure. The temporary railroad crossing will connect Arkendale Road and Brent Point Road slightly north of the existing intersection.
Additionally, during the closure traffic traveling to and from Brent Point Road east of the railroad crossing must use Route 633 (Arkendale Road) and Route 611 (Widewater Road). Through traffic will not be permitted on Brent Point Road west of the railroad crossing during the day. In the event of an emergency, direct access will be provided to this area. The work is expected to be complete by Friday, July 29.
Route 610 (Garrisonville Road)
Monday – Thursday, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. One lane will be closed intermittently on Route 610 eastbound and westbound at Onville Road. Motorists may periodically encounter brief delays in the overnight hours in this work zone. Crews are placing sewer lines in connection with the Route 610/Onville Road intersection improvement project.

Monday – Thursday, 6 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and Friday, 6 a.m. – noon. Stay alert for mobile lane closures. Crews will be performing routine maintenance activities in the following locations:

(Update) Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. Tree removal will continue on River Road this week. Motorists should expect a single lane closure at various locations. Complete traffic stops up to 15 minutes may be needed periodically to safely remove trees and protect motorists. Crews will be working between Bragg Road and Spotswood Furnace Road.
Route 628 (Smith Station Road)
Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Motorists should expect lane closures and delays on Route 628 southbound between the CVS entrance and Courtland High School. Flaggers will be directing traffic in the work zone. This work is in connection with the Route 628 (Smith Station Road) Turn Lanes and Signal Modification Project.
Harrison Road
Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. – noon. Motorists should expect intermittent flagging and single lane closures on Route 620 (Harrison Road) for tree removal. Motorists may periodically encounter brief delays in the overnight hours in this work zone. This work is in connection with the Route 1 and Harrison Road Intersection Improvement Project.

Motorists will be restricted to one lane in the work zone from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. This work is in connection with the Route 301 Bridge Rehabilitation Project.
Highway Improvement Projects
City of Fredericksburg
Fall Hill Avenue Widening and I-95 Overpass Replacement Project
Construction is underway on the Fall Hill Avenue widening and I-95 overpass replacement project. Motorists should expect lane closures and brief delays on Fall Hill Avenue between the Rappahannock Canal bridge and Carl D. Silver Parkway (Central Park), as well as on Mary Washington Boulevard. The project will be completed in January 2017.
Stafford County
95 Express Lanes Southern Terminus (North of Exit 143/Garrisonville Road)
(New) Construction is underway on the project to extend 95 Express Lanes in Stafford County. The approximate 2.5 mile extension will carry traffic beyond the flyover ramp where 95 Express Lanes currently end, just north of Exit 143 at Route 610 (Garrisonville Road). When the project is complete, northbound traffic in the main lanes will be able to enter 95 Express Lanes earlier at a new left entrance south of the Garrisonville Road overpass. The existing left entrance north of Garrisonville Road will remain. Southbound Express Lanes traffic heading to the Fredericksburg area and south will be able to continue past Garrisonville and merge about one mile south of Garrisonville Road. The southbound ramp is scheduled to open by early 2018, and the northbound ramp will open in summer 2018.
Route 610/Onville Road Intersection Improvement Project
Construction is underway at the intersection of Route 610 (Garrisonville Road) and Route 641 (Onville Road) to build additional turn lanes. Traffic has been reduced to one lane in each direction on Onville Road. The project will be completed in May 2017.
Route 17
Construction is underway to widen Route 17 from four to six lanes between McLane Drive and Stafford Lakes Parkway, a distance of nearly 2 miles. The work zone extends from just south of the I-95 interchange to Cardinal Forest Drive. Travel lanes will remain open, but motorists may encounter slight traffic shifts in the work zone. This project will be completed by December 2016.
Route 1
Be alert for a temporary traffic pattern on Route 1 southbound at the site of the new Aquia Hilton. The through lanes on Route 1 southbound from just south of Port Aquia Drive to just prior to the intersection of Route 1 and Coachman Drive (at the 7-Eleven) will be shifted to the left. The continuous center lane for left turns in this area will be closed to accommodate the traffic shift. This work is related to construction of the Aquia Hilton. The pattern is anticipated to be in place through July 2016.
Route 1 and Garrisonville Road Turn Lane Project
Stafford County is locally administering a project to add a second right turn lane from Route 1 southbound to westbound Route 610 (Garrisonville Road). The project seeks to reduce congestion and driver delay on Route 1 southbound. New traffic signal equipment will also be installed at the intersection. Construction will begin in July and conclude in September 2016. Drivers may encounter lane closures during off-peak and overnight hours.
Spotsylvania County
Route 1 and Route 620 (Harrison Road)
Construction to build additional turn lanes and extend existing turn lanes is underway at the intersection of Route 1 and Harrison Road in Spotsylvania County. Motorists should be alert for construction crews and equipment. The project is scheduled to be completed in May 2018.
Route 628 (Smith Station Road)
Construction is underway on the Route 628 (Smith Station Road) Turn Lanes and Signal Modification Project. The project is located on Smith Station Road near the Route 208 (Courthouse Road) intersection. Motorists should expect periodic lane closures and delays in the work zone.
Caroline County
Route 722 (Nelson Hill Road)
Nelson Hill Road is closed to traffic at the bridge over the Mattaponi River for a bridge rehabilitation project. Motorists should follow the posted detour route. Estimated completion is mid-September 2016.
Caroline County/King George County
Route 301 at Rappahannock River
Bridge rehabilitation is underway on the James Madison Memorial Bridge over the Rappahannock River. Maintenance will occur below the bridge deck and includes repairing concrete, replacing bearings, shoring up rip-rap on the slope, and replacing navigation lights. All lanes are currently open on the bridge, but single lane closures will be installed in the future. Project completion is October 2017.
