Weis Markets Announces Plans to Purchase Fredericksburg Area Food Lion Stores

Local Giant stores will remain, but Food Lion stores will change ownership, Ahold and Delhaize Group announced July 13, 2016.
“[Our] United States subsidiaries have reached agreements with buyers to divest a total of 86 stores in a limited number of locations in which the companies’ U.S. subsidiaries both operate,” Ahold and Delhaize Group said in a press release. “These divestments are being made in connection with the United States Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) pending review of the proposed merger between the two companies.”
The divested stores are being sold to “well established supermarket operators, and are expected to be converted by the buyers to their new banners and re-opened as supermarkets after any remodeling planned by the buyers.”

United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 400 and Giant Food employees held a press conference and rally outside the Eagle Village Giant on Wednesday, March 23, 2016, voicing concern for their jobs. Progressive Grocer had reported that as many as 83 stores — six in Fredericksburg — could be closed because of the proposed Ahold and Delhaize merger.
On June 24, 2015, Ahold and Delhaize announced their intention to merge, creating an international retailer with a portfolio of strong, trusted local brands, more than 6,500 stores and over 375,000
associates. These brands serve more than 50 million customers every week in Europe and the United States. The merger is awaiting FTC approval.
