Stafford County will hold a public information meeting about the soon-to-open Lake Mooney boat launch and check-in facility. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 14, 2016, in the Gayle Middle School auditorium, 100 Panther Dr., in Stafford.
Formerly called Rocky Pen Run Reservoir, Lake Mooney was renamed for late Stafford Deputy Jason Mooney, who died in an accident on I-95 after responding to an emergency call on October 19, 2007.
The reservoir was created by the construction of a dam 2,000 feet upstream at the mouth of Rocky Pen Run, which is north of the Rappahannock River. Completed in 2014, Lake Mooney holds 5.54 billion gallons of water at full elevation, within a surface area of 503 acres. It supplies water for southern Stafford residents
The new Lake Mooney boat launch and check-in facility, located at 500 Greenbank Rd. in Falmouth, is scheduled to open to the public on Saturday, May 28, 2016.
Non-motorized boats, such as canoes and kayaks, will be allowed. Swimming is not permitted. Fishing is not yet allowed, but will be permitted once the fish population has matured, the county said.
