The Virginia Department of Emergency Management and Dominion Virginia Power will conduct an emergency-simulation drill Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016, at the North Anna Nuclear Power Station in Mineral, Virginia.
The exercise will simulate a radiological emergency to help state and local governments test their response procedures, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) said.
Residents may see emergency response teams and vehicles from Spotsylvania, Caroline, Hanover, Louisa, and Orange counties participating in the exercise on the roads near the North Anna Power Station, as well as additional traffic on Courthouse Road (State Route 208), Kentucky Sprints Road (State Route 652) and Haley Drive (State Route 700).
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will monitor the exercise’s progress and conduct an analysis of the results.
A review of the analysis will be held in a public meeting at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, 9901 Midlothian Turnpike, in Richmond.
North Anna generates 1,892 megawatts from its two units, according to Dominion Virginia Power. Unit 1 began commercial operation in June 1978, and Unit 2 followed in December 1980.
The facility was named after the North Anna River, which was dammed to form the 9,600-acre Lake Anna reservoir and the 3,400-acre Waste Heat Treatment Facility, used to provide cooling water for the station.
