City of Fredericksburg residents continue to dig out from the weekend’s 14 inches of snow.
A drive around the area Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, revealed many of the major state maintained roads — Route 3, Route 17, I-95 — have at least one lane cleared in each direction. Side streets in the city remain largely uncleared.
Fredericksburg Department of Public Works crews were out working Monday, but it’s slow going. Clearing the snow is hampered by the amount and by the number of cars buried along the curb.
Snow removal crews contracted by the city began a second evening of work at 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25, in the downtown business district.
While you’re waiting for snow removal crews to make it to your neighborhood, the Fredericksburg Fire Department asks your help with the following:
Check Downspouts for Ice Dams
Cold weather and significant snowfall can be detrimental to gutters and downspouts, causing ice dams. Ice dams can form when water from melting snow re-freezes at the edge of a roofline. Without removing snow from a roof, an ice dam may grow large enough to prevent water from draining off a roof. Water can then back up underneath roof shingles and potentially make its way into a home. To prevent ice dams from forming, remove snow from your roof by using a rake, and clear downspouts. Clearing downspouts will prevent standing water from collecting.
Clear Area Around Fire Hydrants Near Your Home
In the event of an emergency, first responders do not have time to waste. The Fredericksburg Fire Department is asking residents with a fire hydrant nearby to clear three feet around the fire hydrant. This will allow fire fighters to quickly access a fire hydrant during an emergency.
