Mary Washington Healthcare (MWHC) Regional Cancer Center’s (RCC) comprehensive lung cancer program now includes low-dose CT lung cancer scans provided by Medical Imaging of Fredericksburg.
Thoracic surgeon and RCC Lung Cancer Committee Chairman Dr. Timothy Sherwood believes low-dose CT can improve survival rates by up to 20 percent.
The five-year lung cancer survival rate nationally is about 54 percent with earliest detection, according to MWHC. In Virginia between 2007–2011 (the latest years available), that rate was only 19 percent.
To qualify for low-dose CT lung screening, you must:
Be between 55-77 years old
Have a tobacco smoking history of at least 30 pack-years (that is, one pack-a-day for 30 years)
Be a current smoker or have quit within the past 15 years
