Spotsylvania County Public Schools (SCPS) has received a $100,000 startup grant from local businessman Ron Rosner to fund the SCPS Literacy Partnership.

“This program will enable Spotsylvania County Public Schools to purchase materials and provide teachers with the high quality professional learning to create a supported environment of literacy in our elementary schools,” said Amber Belaka, SCPS communications specialist and grant writer.

SCPS will purchase the Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) guided reading teaching system to help bring students to grade level achievement in reading, Belaka said. The system includes take home books to “engage parents as partners in the students’ success.”

The initial grant will fund the program at two elementary schools: Brock Road and Wilderness. The school district is seeking additional business partners to help expand the program to other elementary schools in Spotsylvania County.

Ron Rosner is founder and chairman of the board of the Rosner Automotive Group.
