With the theme “Welcome to the Fast Track, Spotsylvania,” the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) and Spotsylvania County cut the ribbon at the new Spotsylvania VRE commuter rail station on Monday, Nov. 16, 2015.
Located southwest of US 17 and Crossroads Parkway, the station becomes the southern terminus for VRE train service on the Fredericksburg Line and represents the first extension of VRE commuter rail service since it began operations in 1992.
The station consists of a 1,500 space parking lot, a waiting area with bathroom facilities, and a 700-foot platform with canopy.
Speakers at the morning ribbon cutting ceremony included U.S. Representatives Dave Brat and Rob Wittman, Virginia Senator Bryce Reeves; Spotsylvania County Supervisors Gary Skinner and Greg Cebula, Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation Director Jennifer Mitchell, and Fairfax County Supervisor and VRE Chairman John C. Cook.
Spotsylvania County and the Virginia Departments of Transportation and Rail and Public Transportation provided the funding, and the County and VRE built the station, parking and new track improvements for the CSX railroad. The commuter parking lot costs approximately $10.5 million and the station and platform cost approximately $4 million.
Seven VRE trains will depart Spotsylvania Station each work day from as early as 4:57 a.m. and as late as 7:40 a.m. Please go to VRE.org for all train arrival and departure times. VRE will add an additional train on the Fredericksburg Line and make minor schedule adjustments prior to the end of 2015.
