Update 7 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015: A flash flood watch is in effect for the region from Friday morning through Saturday evening, the National Weather Service said.
_____
Hurricane Joaquin is expected to move closer to the Mid-Atlantic during the next several days, bringing heavy rain to the Fredericksburg region. “If the storm does reach the Mid-Atlantic be aware that heavy rain, wind and tidal flooding will be possible,” the National Weather Service said.
The Rappahannock River is projected to crest at 11 feet at approximately 8 p.m. on September 30, the City of Fredericksburg reported. Flood stage at City Dock is 13 feet.
Virginia State Police advise all motorists to Drive to Save Lives with the pending rain forecasted through the coming days, with additional potential for flooding:
Use your Headlights
State law requires headlights on when windshield wipers are activated. Plus, the headlights make you more visible to other drivers when visibility is limited in a heavy downpour.
Slow Your Speed
Slowing your speed will help you safely navigate inclement road and weather conditions.
Turn Around. Don’t Drown.
Never drive through standing water. What looks like a puddle can be deep and swift-moving water, so don’t risk it. Turn around and find another, safer route to your destination.
Always Buckle Up
Never Drive Distracted
Dial 511 for Road Conditions
Reserve 911 and #77 for emergencies calls only.
