Tree Fredericksburg is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons who have destroyed their plantings in recent weeks.

Vandals attempted to chop down a six-year-old Crabapple tree in the median at Washington Avenue and Lewis Street.

Anne and Carl Little, founders of Tree Fredericksburg, discovered the destroyed tree on Saturday morning, September 6.  An axe was left at the scene, and police are processing it for fingerprints.

“We were wondering why they left the axe,” Anne said.  “There was a nest of ground bees under that tree.  Maybe they got disturbed?”

A large Willow Oak was felled by an axe during the evening of August 26.  “The value of the tree was in excess of $1,000, which makes the vandalism a felony,” Anne said.

Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to call the Fredericksburg Police Department at 540 373-3122.

Tree Fredericksburg is dedicated to restoring and maintaining a vibrant urban forest in the City of Fredericksburg.
