The Interfaith Community Council will host their annual School Dressing Days on August 8 and 9, 2014, at The Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints, 1710 Bragg Rd., in Fredericksburg.
The event provides clothing and school supplies to children in grades K – 12 who live in the City of Fredericksburg and the counties of Spotsylvania, Stafford, King George and Caroline. “We don’t have set qualifications,” organizer Becky Paul said. “If you need help, come.”
Various churches in the area pay dues to be part of the Interfaith Community Council, and these dues are used to support service events including School Dressing Days, Meals on Wheels and more.
“School Dressing Days is our biggest event,” Paul said. We’ve lost track of exactly what year we began, but we’re in our fourth decade. When we started, we helped 67 children. The most we’ve served with one event is 1,600.”
Each child receives new underwear, socks, pair of jeans and a shirt, and may choose gently used outerwear and shoes (sizes are limited) collected from school lost-and-founds and through donations. Children also receive a backpack with new school supplies and toiletries.
Many school supplies and toiletries are donated by various groups like Sunday School classes and Vacation Bible Schools as community projects, Paul said.
School Dressing Days runs 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Families that have preregistered will need to bring identification for each child (birth certificate, social security card, medical card, DMV ID card or report card) and proof of address (driver’s license, DMV ID card, lease, utility bill or letter from social services) to their appointed time slot.
Preregistration slots are filled, but walk-ins are welcome Saturday from 2 to 3 p.m. Unfortunately at that time, sizes and selection will be very limited.
