Fredericksburg arts icon Johnny P. Johnson presents “Rhythm & More” as the featured show at Art First Gallery in March.

The exhibition of new works will be celebrated with a First Friday reception from 6 – 9 p.m. on March 7.

“There is no artist in Fredericksburg who has so deeply touched and influenced so many of the area’s neighbors, friends, artists and students,” said fellow artists Dan Finnegan and Kathleen Walsh.

Johnson’s latest group of paintings feature variations on familiar subjects, including dancers and musicians.  “I’ve used different techniques, more textures and new colors, than I usually do,” he said.

Johnson came to Fredericksburg in 1959 to teach art at what was then Walker Grant High School, according to his online biography.

The award-winning artist, teacher, juror and humanitarian has exhibited his work in the U.S., France, Benin and Jamaica.  His paintings are in many corporate, diplomatic and private collections.

Johnson is a founding member of Art First Gallery.  He continues to teach and mentor artists of all ages.

Art First Gallery, 824 Caroline St., is open daily from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
