Fredericksburg Parks & Recreation is hosting a local #ALSIceBucketChallenge to raise money and awareness for ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The event will take at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 3, Dixon Park Pool, 1300 Dixon St., Fredericksburg.
“#ALSIceBucketChallenge has been trending on social media, and we wanted to get in on the fun,” said Joanne Jones, superintendent of Leisure Services and Dixon Park Pool manager. “There is no pre-registration, no age limit. We are hoping, with the participation and support of all the local residents, to be the largest #ALSIceBucketChallenge yet. Let’s get this to go viral!”
Parks & Recreation will provide the water and the ice, and participants need to BYOB — “Bring Your Own Bucket.” Cost for participation is a donation in any amount. All proceeds will be donated to The ALS Association DC/MD/VA.
The ALS Association announced that as of August 16, 2014, it has received $11.4 million nationally from Ice Bucket Challenge donations, surpassing the $1.7 million raised during the same July 29 – August 16 period last year. #StrikeOutALS
